Go to Dog Food Analysis - Reviews of kibble for reviews on dog food. You'll be surprised by some.

That's not an easy question to answer as there is no single "Universal Best Food for ALL Yorkies." And there are many options regarding diet--commercial, home cooked, raw and any combination imaginable in between.

A few suggestions to help you in your search for the 'perfect' fit for your little one:

While dogfoodanalysis.com has alot of good info--it's based entirely on the opinion of the site editors, not long term professional research. Please do not let your search start and end on that site, with one opinion. Another site you may want to include that links you to information from various sources regarding various diets as already mentioned is:
Dog Food Review Ratings

Also, if you look at the top of this section of YT, there is a sticky with a list of commercial food manufactures that give you their contact info--many of them will send you free samples to try and coupons for their products if you contact them and request them.

Finding the perfect option for YOUR dog will take trying different options and observing the results you get from them, but eventually, you will find a good fit.

Good luck and welcome to YT.

If you don't want to do a ton of research, the easy answer is to go somewhere OTHER THAN petsmart, walmart, grocery store and look for brands like Merrick, Canidae, Innova, Evangers, Artemis, Orijen... Find a small independent dog store or boutique and they will help you. Read the ingredients - corn and by-products are bad, meat as the first several ingredients is good. Then it's a process to find out what your dog likes and what they can tolerate.

Mine are on Canidae and we have tried Orijen, Nature's Variety, Evangers, Merrick... all good foods. Next we are going to try Taste of the Wild.

The best part is that even the most expensive "premium" foods are affordable because Yorkies are so small!

I found that Taste of the Wild gives strong smelling poop. Both to my cat and dog. But I agree that it is a great food. My cat is finicky but goes crazy for this food. I get it at a feed store, they even carry free samples.

Well I'm beyond retentive when it comes to things that could affect the health of my Bella so I did ALOT of research. Here is what I learned:

Everyone has their own favorite or what they think is best. The dog food analysis page is helpful, but you have to keep in mind that they isn't any other tsting done. Just ingredient analysis and that's it. What works well for one dog, may not work that great for yours. Each dog is different and will handle food differently. So you may have to do some trial and errors.

A good thing though is that when you go to a smaller pet store to get the higher quality food, they will more than likely have samples available. I started out with Science Diet and switched Bella to Natural Balance. I went to the pet store with the intentions of buying Wellness and had the good fortune of finding sales people that could really go over the details of the ingredients with me. As a bonus the person had yorkies herself as pets. So she had found alot of yorkies, her own included, had problems with Wellness. So I'm not sure if it was just a bad batch that was sent to the store or whatever. Anyway, so she mentioned that with the Natural Balance you could feed the same food to your puppy as the adult. Just adjust the amount you feed. That was a huge point fo me.

Another thing that the sales person mentioned that's important is that if you constantly feed the same food/flavor to a dog then they can develop an allergy to it. Specifically if it's aways chicken. So since the petstore I purchase my suppies from has a rewards program for their customers where you buy 10 bags of food and get the 11th free. I plan on switching flavors of the food then to keep a little variety.

So there's my 2 cents.
