Most give 3 series of puppy shots, plus 1 rabies shot. In Yorkies, they aren't usually started until 8 weeks and are given at 3 to 4 week intervals. Any shots given sooner wouldn't be considered effective due to the pup still getting immunity from the mother. When you got your pup, did the health record have the labels from the vaccine vials or was the info just written in? I wouldn't trust a health record from a breeder that didn't provide the actual labels from the vaccine vials along with the dates they were given. If everything is in order, your pup should only still need the rabies until ! year from now when she'll need her first adult boosters.

It depends on how old the puppy was when first given the vaccines from the breeder. If the shote were given at too young of an age then they are going to be ineffective. One good thing about your vet is that he honored the vaccinces that were given. My vet would not accept them! My pup also had 2 series of vaccines before I got her.
The thing is You need to be very careful not to over vaccinate your puppy. I ended up giving Suzi 2 more rounds of shots + the two the breeder gave. Suzi needs her rabies , and that is all. I will not allow the vet to give her anther round. I am too scared that it is too much for her, if a dog gets too many there are serious consequences.

I am sorry for your trouble . what do you mean your first one died?
and it is so hard to find a good vet?
My niece lives in las Vegas and I am giving her one of my pups for a graduation present. If you find a good vet let me know so I can fill her in on who to take my puppy to. Keely will be starting colleg soon but she is going to live at home so I know she will have help watching the puppy. She gets to fly out here and pick it out then we are driving to TN to see her dad.

I'm sorry for the loss of the puppy. My parents use the Banfield Hospital in Sun City. He appears to be quite competent as is the one in San Bernardino, CA.

As to the vaccinations, I always put the labels in the puppy books. My puppies are up-to-date on their shots when they leave here. I tell the new pet parents to walk away from any vet that insists they have to re-vaccinate the puppies. I ask that they call my vet who will confirm the puppies were given their shots. I believe you can over-vaccinate these little ones. We give half-shots on puppies. I believe many vets use vaccinations as a way to make money; the protocols are very clear that a 20# mastiff puppy and a 1.5# yorkie really do not need the same amounts of vaccine.

If the vet said three rounds is enough, I'd go with that sense most vets won't under vaccinate. If you are concerned about the levels being too low, do a titer about three weeks after the last vaccine is given.

I don't usually post too much, but I wanted to let everyone know what one of my Vets told me about vaccinations. The recommended dose of vaccine is what it takes to immunize...not the size of the puppy. I had questioned him about the rabie vaccine so while I was there he called the company. They said if the recommended dose was not given, the dog could still get the disease. It's not the size of the dog that matters, but what it takes to either kill or immunize the disease.

Has anyone else's Vet told them this? None of my babies have had problems with their vaccinations ever, but I would be afraid to get a lower dose and they not be covered.

It doesn't have to do with the size of the dog but what it takes to create immunity. Now the rabies is supposedly way more powerful than it needs to be, so you might get away with giving less but as a general rule the whole thing should be given in my opinion.

I, too, live in Las Vegas. I see you're wanting to find your niece a Vet. I don't know where she lives but I go to one at the Rainbow Animal Hospital on Rainbow & Washington Sts. It's nice because they're open late and on Saturdays. We've had both our babies spayed & neutered there. I can't really say how they're prices compare but I've been happy with the treatment that we get when we go there. If you want some help finding her one, just let me know.

I'm one that is completely against over-vaccination but my understanding is it's the virus count that's important. Enough must be used to provoke the immune system regardless of the dog's size. It's not like medicine where body weight is taken into account. IMO, giving half doses of vaccine is like not finishing off antibiotics. You could cause the virus to mutate into a more resistant strain by providing partial protection only. I would never give anything less than the full dose of vaccine.
