| Dew Claws We got Roxy 5 days ago...she is 12 weeks and I just noticed last night that she still has her front dew claws. I read about it online and learned that it is too late to remove them now. Anyone had any trouble with them catching and tearing? |

| Its never too late to remove dew claws. i know several people who have had them removed when their dog is under for spay/neuter. I've had several very active dogs that all have their dew claws and none have ever gotten them caught on anything.

| All you really need to worry about is that when you clip her nails, to clip those as well, otherwise, they can grow so long they grow into itself. You can have them removed when she is getting fixed though.

| Rudy still has his dew claws and he's 2 years old. I never gave it a thought when we had him neutered @ 6 months old to tell the vet to remove them. He's never gotten them caught on anything.

Senior Yorkie Talker | My puppy has his, and on the one paw its scaly and dry around the claw, I talked to my vet about removal, but she said that she can't remove them till he is at least 6 months old.

| Kammie still has hers, and they get caught on stuff. She is going to get them removed when she gets her 1 baby tooth she has left out at 1yr if it's not fallen out by then. It's better to do both at once rather than putting her under anesth. 2 times. Just make sure to keep them trimmed |

| I have had several dogs with dew claws. In all the years I have had dogs my Schnauzer had one bleed once and that was it. I think he got it caught in the cyclone fence. I don't think I would bother to get them removed if it was me.

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | my sadie has hers... but i am having them removed.. she had problems.. they could be in pain, and you might not know... i learned my lesson.. i will always remove them on the 2nd day and dock tails on day 2.... the quickstop worked well.. it only hurts for a sec... and they are very sleepy at this age.. it was hard to do the first one, but my mentor showed me.. i took them to her house.. next time i will do my own, but i had someone help me the first time..i think only the 1/3 tip is docked... leaving 2/3 of the tail.. it stopped bleeding real quick.. 3-4 minutes natural coagulation,, .. then i used the quickstop if it did not stop bleeding.. i would not twist or clamp, or suture for my puppies... sadie was not docked... but she needs her dew claws done by my vet... also clipping the first razorlike puppy toenails is important too..

| Chizziewink's dew claws were not removed. She is four years old and has never had a problem with catching them on things or any signs of tearing. The toe nails on the dew claws tend to curl around, so I have to be extra careful and keep them clipped short so that they don't grow into the pad of her foot. |

| Derby is 7 months old and still has his. When I took him in to have his last baby tooth pulled I asked the vet about them and if they needed to be removed and she said no. They don't get caught on anything and we've had no problems.

YT 500 Club Member | Sophie has hers, and we have had only minor problems. Mostly the fact that they don't seem to get trimmed properly when she is groomed. We have had to get them trimmed between times occasionally. They also seem to curl. One did split, but our vet was able to trim it well enough to get it fixed. If we ever get another Yorkie, I would make certain that the dew claws were removed.
