caution!! not detectable at an early age It has been almost two months since I have visited my favorite web site, Yorkie Talk. The holiday hussle and bussle has kept me away. Schatzie is now 8 months old. The past two weeks she has been lame in her left rear leg. Today she had x-ray's taken and diagnosed with Articular Necrosis (Perthes Disease). This can be herediatry predisposition or happen from an injury. In Schatzie's case, it is herediatary. Crying all the way home from the vet only brought back painfull memories of my last two pups purchased from a breeder that one had to be returned due to hip displaysia at 5 months (Brussels Griffon) and the second died only having her a week due to complications from a vaccination (Yorkie, 4 months weighing 2.4 ounces) So, then came along our Schatzie. Well, Since having her arrive home last August and falling in love with her, no way could we send her back to her breeder for a refund. We are keeping her, no matter whatever happens to her. She will have surgery next Friday (first time ever under anesthesia) to take off the top femoral dead bone and neck due to lack of blood flow. She will come home Friday night. Her rest will be two months in her kennel and then rehab. Before purchasing a Yorkie I have read many books on the breed. Not any of my books ever had readings on such a disease, yet after visiting with the vet and doing more research on the web site today, this disease is very common amongst Terriers. The onset is 5-8 months of age and is not detectable at an early age. I just wanted other Yorkie newby's to watch out for signs. (using only 3 legs, licking their leg often, irritable, whiny, etc) A simple x-ray will show a confirmed diagnosis of such disease. Schatzie now walks on three legs and after surgery and recoup time am hoping she uses all 4 legs. The love that I have for Schatzie out weighs any such new puppy guarantee and refund of such money. I have talked to her breeder today and I was surprised to find myself more knowledgable then she was, at no fault of her own. Just wanted to share this with all of you and it feels good being back online to Yorkietalk.

I'm so sad to hear that. I hate it when small dogs have to undergo anesthesia. Make sure you ask them to use the smallest tube possible and maybe take out any baby teeth while she's under. Or maybe that might be too stressful for her to have so many things at once??? I'm sure Schatzie will be fine. I'm glad the dysfunction is repairable. Please let us know how everything turns out. We'll be thinking of you.

Sorry to hear about Schatzie. Good luck with the surgery. My Hercules is only 4 1/2 months, so I'll be sure to take notice if he starts to walk on only 3 legs. Thanks for the warning. Brandi & Hercules

Thank you all so much for your replys!!! I asked the vet about spaying her while she is under for her surgery but he said that is too much for her, but possibly can have her baby teeth removed as need be. It is sad that she will have to yet go under for another surgery to be spayed. However Im thinking id rather wait till next year on that since she is not around male dogs anyways and I think two surgery's in one year it too much. It just amazes me how much we worry about our babies!! More than ourselves even. Thank you again for your kind words!

I am so sorry to hear that your baby and you have been through so much! It is a relief to know that the condition can be repaired and she will again have use of the 4th leg. Are there any other signs of this condition? What about biting the leg? Tinkie is constantly biting her hind legs, one in particular. I wonder why she bites herself like that. She doesn't bite threw the skin, but still it seems she is biting kinda hard. I was just wondering because I am new to the Yorkie World. I worry so much about her and I couldn't even imagine how stressful and painful it must be for you to go threw all of this. You and your baby will be in my prayers and thoughts! Please keep us updated on the surgery and progress :-) Annie and Tinkie

Thank you for your kind words and prayers. This disease is all new to me too, but the last couple days I have really done my research. You can pull up web sites on google search for Perthes Disease on dogs and it will give you so much info. Yes, one of the signs is biting at the leg, but if your baby is not limping or favoring her leg I wouldn't worry too much, she might be biting at her leg now due to maybe an insect bite, allergies, or just nerves. Possibly when she begins biting her leg and seems to be agressive about it, off her a chew toy. Sometimes they just get stressed and start chewing on themselves, funny how they are. I hope your research answers many of your questions you have. And just remember if she begins limping for long periods of time and wont use her leg and is 5-8 months of age it never hurts to visit your vet and have an x-ray done. I found out that this disease is common in teens also, go figure. Terrier's, especially Yorkies are highly at risk for this disease. Luckily it is fixable and have findings of no such problems later. Usually this disease is lateral also and not bilateral (both legs)... The surgery is not expensive either, i have been quoted appx. $450.00. This could be so much worse for sure. Again thank you for your prayers and next Friday I will give an update on her surgery and the results.

Toto's Mom and Fast Eddie, Thanks to you both, feels great to be back online again too! Yeah, I am very anxious about next Friday but I am sure she will have little angels watching over her, I have a lot of faith in that. By watching her play and run a muck, you'd never know she is hurting. I could never imagine that a dog could be so darn fast even on 3 legs, hahaaahaha. She's a sweetie! Thanks again and Schatzie gives Yorkie hugs back!
