| Recurrent vomiting...ADVICE?? My yorkie has generally been a healthy dog. For the first 5 years of her life, she had occasional episodes where she threw up...maybe one throw up once or twice a year...and it was usually pretty easily associated with either being fed too many snacks (I know...not great for her) or car sickness or over-activity. About 8 months ago, she started to have these vomiting episodes where she would vomit several times...usually 2-3 times per day for about 4-5 days. There have been a few miniscule streaks of blood in the vomit, usually seen after a few days of vomiting. We went to the vet who diagnosed her with gastritis and gave us an antiemetic and an antibiotic. She usually did get better after 4-5 days. This same thing has happened now about 4 more times since...same thing with 2-3 vomits per day for 4-5 days. We have taken her to the vet a few more times and been given the same diagnosis and same medications. We actually went for a second opinion one time and got the same diagnosis and medications. I'm not convinced that the meds work, though. One episode, we did not take her to the vet, and she got better on her own after 4-5 days, just like before. And once while she was on medications, the vomiting stopped about 3 days but after she was finished with her medications, she vomited for another 3 days. So, the medications don't seem to do much. She eats the same foods and snacks as always. She is not around any other dogs, just like always. My question (sorry for the long drawn out story) is...should I insist on more work up being done? The only things that have been done are stool studies (a couple times, the vomiting was associated with loose stools), but no blood or x-rays. Is this normal for a yorkie that is getting older? Any ideas what else I should push the vet into doing? Thanks...you guys have always helped when I have questions! |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | What are you feeding her? Maybe you need to change her food. Not sure what else to recommend. Just wanted to give you a hug and let you know I will say a prayer that she gets better.

| I feed her Royal canin...she's been on this since she was a puppy. It's the only food she'll eat pretty well (she's never been a big eater). Thanks for the encouragement...it just makes me worried sick to think that she may have something more serious wrong with her...or that the vet may be missing something... |

Luvs Lulu Donating Member | Personally I would switch to a better food. RC is not the greatest of food and it contains corn. Obviously her food is causing the stomach issues. Try switching it before you go through all the panels etc. That would be my first move before subjecting mine to a battery of test.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Wow, how scary for you. So sorry your baby has been suffering! I'm surprised your vet has not done a full blood panel, or did I miss that? I'd really do a full blood work up, but probably with a different vet. Is there a GI specialist at all in your area? Has her throat been looked at thoroughly? What are you feeding? And nothing precipitates these episodes that you can think of right?

| No precipitating events with these 4-5 days of vomiting episodes that I can think of. Usually, during that time, i just offer her her regular food with no snacks and no table foods (and she gets water of course). No blood work so far. Just the vet keeps telling me it's gastritis and gives the same medications. Have already been to 2 different vets and never got anything more than stool study (always neg) and the antibiotic and anti-emetic. Don't know of a GI specialist, but will definitely look into it... They looked in her throat...but I don't know what "thorough" means...they never stuck like a tongue depressor in there to look way down or anything.... |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Is there a reason they've ruled out ulcers? Because those could flare - which might explain the intermittentness of it. If the diagnosis is almost chronic gastritis, haven they explained why they havne't put her on a permantent preventive medicine of some kind? And, have they given diet instruction?

| No, they have never put her on preventative medications and they have never explained why she might be doing this so frequently all of a sudden even though she has not changed food or been around other dogs or anything. Maybe it's time to have a talk with the vet. Seems like you guys all feel like something more needs to be done or explained... |
