| Mucus in poo??? My baby is 6weeks old, and I have had her for three days now. Sometimes when se goes poo, she has to strain and it sometimes takes her 2 or 3 times to "get it all out". Also, sometimes there is a white-yellowish mucus on the ends of her poo. What can I do??? She is my 1st youkie and I want her to be healthy. I am feeding her exactly what the breeder was giver her, and she said this has never happened with her before. |

| Hi there. my little one had mucus and blood in his pooh when i first got him. i took him to the vet and they took a sample and it turned out that he had Giardia. Take him to the vet and get him looked at. |

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Definately get a stool sample to see if she has giardia or coccydia which can be cleared up with medicine. Good luck

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | First, WELCOME . Second - SIX weeks old? Holy cow, that's super young. Most yorkie pups don't go until they're 12 weeks old - sometimes 16 weeks old for the really small ones. Given her age, I would get her to the vet ASAP - without a second thought, to be blunt. What are you feeding, btw?

| Yeah she is a little monkey!! She's about 13 ounces right now in weight. She is eating Caesar’s puppy food (that's what her breeder was feeding her) and her dry food is Iams for small breeds. She was drinking milk, but I have slowly been taking that away from her trying to get her use to water. She is VERY active and I absolutely adore her!!!! I was just a little worried about her poop. Thanks ahead to all of you "veteran" yorkie owners for all of you advice!! |

| Any new puppy should be taken to the vet ASAP for a wellness check. Your baby is really too young to be away from its mom, but that's water under the bridge. If she's been drinking cow's milk, I would suspect that may be affecting her poo. Yorkie babies are subject to going downhill fast if something is wrong so watch out for her. Diarrhea can send them into hypoglycemic shock very quickly which is one of the main dangers to her at this stage. If she hasn't had any shots yet, you should hold off until at least 8 weeks. Any shots she may have had until this point would be ineffective due to her getting immunity from suckling her mom so you may have to start over with her. Take her to the vet for a check-up and keep a close eye on her at this stage. A baby such as yours can be a lot to take on for a new owner. Good luck with her and Welcome to YorkieTalk!! There's lots of good info if you search the site and there's always someone around if you have any questions. |

| Thanks Woogie Man.... She has been drinking the "replacement milk" stuff for puppies, and she has been wormed and had her 1st round of shots. I made her an appointment for a fecal exam and initial wellness exam for tomorrow morning. Keep my little Izzy in your prayers and lets hope for the best!!! I hope to have some pictures up here soon so you guys can see how cute and LITTLE my monkey is!!! Thanks Again! |

| OMG!!!.....that is super tiny. Treat that baby like glass until she gets some size on her. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. If she shows any sign of illness or distress, call your vet. Also, get the number for an after-hours vet, just in case. Not trying to scare you, but these little ones are so fragile, it's hard to believe. Until they reach about 2 pounds, you have to be extra watchful with them. Best of luck with her and don't forget to post pics soon!! |

| 8 OUNCES?? OMG! Honey, that is REALLY LITTLE! My gosh, most 1 week old babies are that weight! I am really concerned about this baby. How the heck did the breeder let this baby go so little? I know it isn't YOUR fault, but my God, I am appalled at whoever the breeder was to let a puppy go this small and this young. I hope your baby does ok, but I would be banging on that vets door first thing in the morning. This baby could go downhill so fast. Please keep us updated hon.

| You should have some Nutri-cal or Karo syrup on hand. It will elevate her blood sugar if it drops. Are you aware of the signs of hypoglycemia? She can become lethargic and limp feeling, eyes not focused, sometimes drooling. They can go into seizure and shock rather quickly and you could lose her. You could give her a dab of Nutri-cal daily, especially after playtime. You don't want to over-do it with the Nutri-cal as it could spike her blood sugar if she gets too much but a dab on your finger after playtime shouldn't hurt. I would limit her playtime for now until she gets bigger. Even though she may want to play (run around), she doesn't have much energy reserves so make sure she gets her rest. Geez, after your last post telling her weight, you've got me scared for her. Best of luck. |

| The Karo gets into their system faster if she's having an episode. The Nutri-cal has vitamins in it so I prefer it as a maintenance product. If she shows signs of an episode, get some Karo down her and call the vet right away. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh my gosh! PLEASE get this baby to the vet ASAP if she has any issues whatsoever. You do need to have Nutrical at hand at all times. What is her feeding schedule? Because really - at this age and weight, she should be fed probably every 4 hours or so. I don't mean to scare you, but I am quite worried for you. I've had animals all my life - my bachelors degree is in nursing and I have some emergency experience - but even I would feel very nervous and uncomfortable with this situation. Please reach out if you need help and keep us posted.

| Thanks everybody for the advise and the support!!! Here is the update: Izzy is a healthy little girl!! The doc said that the mucus in her poo was from her having dairy in her diet. ( that was my assumption too because once the milk was gone there was no mucus) They ran the fecal exam and everything came back great!! He said that she is little, and would need extra "care" but that we seemed to be doing a great job with her!! Her weight is up to 10 ounces now!! Her feeding schedule is basically when she isn't sleeping!! We leave her water and dry food (crushed up) out 24/7. She has her wet food two - three times a day usually around lunch and dinner time and she only gets about a spoonful of that. (Which is PLENTY for her) I am in the process of looking for the cord that goes to our digital camera so all of you guys can see her!! Thanks Again - yall are WONDERFUL!!! |
