| Does your baby bite theirselves ALL THE TIME?!?! Hello all of you fellow Yorkie lovers! I haven't been on here in so long and thought I would drop in to say HI and to ask for some advice. Ok so my little angel Toby has this annoying habit of biting his front legs all the time now. He does that type writer kind of bite where he mini bites in a row then goes on and on and on! I have checked him for fleas - negative, I checked him for a rash - negative and he doesn't even have dry skin! He has now started doing this every night and it's starting to keep us up in bed! Does anyone else have this same problem and what have you done to prevent it. I'm just afraid he's going to make himself bleed at some point. Thanks in advance for any help you can give! Meredith

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oftentimes, dogs will bite/chew/lick their paws and legs bc of allergies to food or environment (could be seasonal). Have you checked pollen in your area at Allergy Weather Forecast - Pollen.com - Hay Fever Relief - 4 Day Allergy Alert Forecast Also, what are you feeding? Once I see you've read this - I'm going to move it to the Health Forum, just fyi - otherwise, it'll soon fall of the bottom of this forum.

| The only thing I can think of is allergies to grass. Some dogs, I had one, will bite their legs and feet because of a reaction to grass. Is he in the grass daily? |

| No, mine doesn't do that. But I would believe that he itches there or he wouldn't be doing it. I don't know if a hydrocortisone spray would be safe to try or not and if he didn't do it anymore then you would know. Check with vet.

| Thank you for your quick responses!! Unfortunately he is not in grass everyday. We live in a condo complex and he's been trained to "do his business" inside. I have to check on his food when I get home to see what brand and kind it is. We recently changed food due to vet recommendation, but this leg biting thing has been going on way before we changed food. I wish it was this easy.

| It's not necessarily an allergy. I have a dog who's 12 and he's been doing it all his life. The vet says it's a nervous habit like nail biting |

| My 4 year old girl Zoe does this also. She has done it pretty much all of her life, no matter what food she has eaten and I buy quality brands. I have wondered if hers is a habit like biting nails and if maybe it is when her nails get longer. I wish I knew why also as it can drive you nuts when they are in bed laying up against you. I can sometimes get on to her and tell her to stop and she will quit.

| It sounds like it may be a food allergy or seasonal allergy...What do you feed your baby?

| When I first brought home my rescue Pommie, Snowboy, he nibbled on his legs all the time. Turned out he is allergic to corn, wheat, and eggs. I was told that if he continues to nibble after taking these things out of his diet, I need to remove chicken. I feed Canidae All Life Styles. Snowboy is doing pretty well on it. Good Luck.

| Yes, Little Man does this too. He also chews and bites around the base of his tail and sometimes his little booty. We thought it was fleas, but never seen any fleas. So, as a precaution I gave him a bath in Dawn Dish Deteregent and combed him with a flea comb. Nothing. Even took him to the vet and they expressed his glands. That seems to help for about an hour or two and his was back at it. The vet told me that if it persist to give benadryl. I did give him benadryl when he really started going to town chewing and biting his booty. Hubby and I talked about it and I told hubby that I don't want to do that cause he's drugged up after giving the benadryl and he don't act himself the next day. So, every now and then I will give him benadryl. It does seem to help a little bit. I feed him Nutro Natural Choice Puppy Small Bites. I'm thinking about switching his food, maybe seeing if that is the problem. His new thing now that he does, is licking. He licks anything and everything he can before I catch him.
