| Tick removal? Help! Lottie got a tick last week...my mum removed it and all was fine....it had just got into her skin (ewwwww) so it was fairly easy to remove. Anyhoo lottie woke me up the other morning at 3am scratching her ear like mad...i couldnt find anything wrong so left it at that. Then today when we came back from our walk in the fields i noticed a "thing" stuck behind her ear....it looked like part of a tick going by what was pulled out of her head the other week, but i think shes managed to scratch off most of this one...hence the early wake up call the other morning...now im worried about whats left in her skin....is it going to grow? is it going to just die off...does it need to be removed..cos i couldnt remove it myself (tried but it wouldnt budge) I have been using Frontline on lottie since last year and had hoped it would stop the ticks as well as fleas but apparently it kills them once they have bitten your pet? im at a total loss as to what to do... Ive heard so many rumours of ticks heads continuing to grow even with out a body...and i couldnt bear my wee lottie having this thing in her any longer than she needs too. any help as always gratefully received! |

| You know, I found 2 ticks on Penny. I freaked! I mean we do live in the woods. But she doesn't go outside. I am guessing they came off of our other dogs or us. I find them on me after we feed the horses. But Penny did have Lyme's vac. So I guess she will be ok. We got the entire tick off of her. I'm not sure about the rumors you've heard. I've heard them as well growing up. But you could call your vet and ask them.

| had a look on the frontline site (Lottie had her mthly dose just last week) and it said that it kills the ticks with in 48hrs and the dead tick will just fall off and anything that remains can be removed with tweezers. |

Frontline DOES NOT KILL ALL TICKS. It only kills some. Read the small print on the package. I found that out last year. I have since switched to Vectra 3D made by Frontline. It kills ticks within 3hrs, supposingly. It is important to get all the tick removed. Try using alcohol and a cotton ball then try and pick it out. It may become infected if left in. Good luck.

| Hi there I have heard that you can dab the tick with alcohol to make it release, dont know if it works though. Iam also from Scotland and have a 2 and 1/2 year old yorkie called Lottie and a 4 year old called Alfie... How old is your little Lottie?

| Lyme's isn't a problem everywhere, so you might not have anything to worry about. All parts of the tick need to be removed and one of the safest ways to do it is with the Tick Twister. You can order them online. Some methods are not recommended because the tick has more of a chance to release toxins into the body and it can be hard to get the whole thing.

| I managed to get it all out using a sterilised pin and a pair of very thing tweezers, made sure i cleaned it all up with disinfectent and put some antiseptic cream on it, today its look fine no sign of infection. Ellie May im going to get one of those but it wouldnt have been any use with the little bit that was left in her skin. Juliealfies mum lottie will be 2 in august! ARCHIE ive read the small print that came with my frontline and it says that it doesnt prevent all ticks from attaching to the dog but will kill them with in the first 24/48hrs and will either drop off or have to be removed. thanks to all who replied i read a lot of "wives tales" online as to how to get rid of ticks most of which would make the matters worse. But did find this good bit of advice! "Do not use ‘petroleum jelly’, any liquid solution, freeze or burn the tick, as this will stimulate it to regurgitate its stomach contents, increasing the chances of infection." |

| BLECH!!! Ticks are one of the grossest things, huh!?! I also use the tick twister, then you get out the whole nasty bug and don't have to worry about the home remedies that are often more dangerous then they are helpful! Since you live in the woods, I would bathe your baby often and use a flea comb daily so you catch any creepy crawlies that find there way on board your baby. I have found more tick looking for a spot to dig then actually burrowed by doing daily exams! Luckily, our babies are teeny so the daily combing and tick search is short! I spritz my furbabies with something called "Critter Oil" diluted in water, in my vacuum, a few drops in their shampoo and rubbed into their collars and it keeps those beastly ticks and fleas outta their hair. It really does work! I don't even use a chemical preventative (in South Florida, no less!) and have zero flea/tick problems. In my 14 month old Cavalier King Charles, I have only ever found one tick burrowed in skin, and three crawling and my Yorkie Mix I only ever found one crawling around. I have never had a flea problem either. I am not saying its foolproof, but the results are amazing, esp. considering I don't use Frontline or anything and romp with my pups all the time in th grass. I recommend it to everyone!!! One bottle has lasted me since I got both my first pup over a year ago, thats how little I need to use! I use the diluted spritz on myself too and it keeps me from being eaten alive by mosquitos!!! I know I must sound like an ad, but its truly amazing. Critter Oil Flea Repellent Hope your baby stays critter free! ~Hilary

anyway.....frontline seems to be working.....another tick was spotted last nite but it was dead as dead can be, and was removed easily. I have started checking her each time i bring her in from a walk. She loves running in the long grass so she probably picks them up from there. She gets a bath every week, I shall def look into some natural ways of detering the ticks...id rather they didnt go on her at all...frontline is fine that it kills them within the 48hrs but id rather they couldnt get on her at all. Going to have a look and see if i can find something similar to the critter oil here in the UK thanks for the advice xx Last edited by tuzzylou; 05-29-2008 at 02:16 AM.
