| New Pup Health Concerns I posted a while ago that I was going to be getting a new pup flown in from Texas from a breeder. I checked everything out with this breeder and everything seemed to be fine. After I had paid him for my new pup and before he shipped her I seen some new pups that he had posted online that he was selling that looked to be in horrible shape and in the background of the pictures it looked like he was in a garage full of cages of pups! I was horrified when I seen then and confronted the breeder and he told me that he keeps the pups in the cages when he is doing shots and grooming so that he knows who has been done and who hasn't ect. I then called his vet to ask him about the health and well being of the pups this breeder breeds and the vet seemed to think that everything was fine and that I had nothing to worry about! I got zoey on Sunday May 18th. The breeder told me that she was expected to be around 5-6 pounds full grown, she is currently 23 weeks. She came with a 1 year health guarantee and he stated she was up to date on her shots and wormings. So when I picked her up from the airport she was terrified as can be expected! We got her home, let he scope things out and tried to make her as comfortable as possible. I noticed 1st how tiny she was. My Meeka is 2 months older than her and looked to be twice her size! She mostly hung out under the chair in the living room and we tried getting her to come out by offering her treats ect. But I didn't want to push the issue too much. The next day we got her out and just held her, gave her treats and loves. And I noticed how dirty she was so I gave her a short and quick bath just to make her feel maybe a little better. The water came out totally brown when I gave her a bath. I had an appointment the next day (2 days after getting her) to take her to the vet. After her bath I noticed she still smelled really awful but just figured that it might take a few baths to get that smell out. I was checking her out, noticed her nails had probably never been trimmed, I looked in her ears and they were so red and swollen and noticed that her ears were the source of her nasty smell! They had scabs all in them both from her scratching at them. It was just horrible! Her eyes were all goopy too. I took her to the vet and gave him all of her records for shots that the breeder had given to me and the vet told me that because they were all given way too long ago (last one back in march) that we had to start the series of shots all over again! As well as deworming her again because it had been too long. the only thing that was up to date was her rabies because the airlines require that! The vet told me she had a horrible infection in both her ears as well as her left eye! So we went home with a bag of medications for her and a huge vet bill later! She still hasn't came out of her shell yet, she very timid and will just lay on the couch and not move. If I put her down then she just goes under some furniture and hides. I haven't seen her playful at all, she won't give any kind of kisses and almost seems lethargic! The vet said that she is fine other than the infections but I am wondering if she is ever going to come out of it? for a 5 month old puppy this behavior is not normal at all! She is eating good and drinking good so atleast I know she is ok there. What do you think I should do? I am so upset with this breeder! And wrote him an email about what the vet discovered! He seemed unconcerned about the whole thing! Do you think my new little girl is going to be alright? (Sorry it was so long!) |

| If she was raised in a cage it will just take her a little longer to adjust and she will be fine. I am glad to hear you are giving her, her space as she needs this. Once she is healthy and learns to trust you she will relax and come out of her shell. I also hope you post this breeders name so you can give heads up to other people who might be considering purchasing from this kennel. Quote:

| Thanks fo much for your reply! I am just hoping that she starts feeling better and is able to have fun with the other yorkies here rather just just hide and lay around all day. For a 5 month old puppy she needs to be tackling the other dogs, stealing their toys and running around. I have yet to see her run at all, even when she goes for a hiding spot she just walks there, never runs! I find this very odd. I hope things get better for her soon! |

The puppy will take awhile to adjust to her new life. She went from knowing only a cage, to being put on a plane and ending up in a very strange place with strange people. She is traumatized right now, but I'm sure when the pain is all gone and she sees no one is going to hurt her and feels safe and loved, she will blossom. | |

| I hope your little one settles in soon, poor baby having a terrible ear infection myst be horrible for her. Once she settles in and she realises how spoiled she is going to be she is going to be one happy girl.

| Where can I go to put the breeders information? Will I get in trouble for posting his name? I don't want anyone else to end up purchasing a sick puppy from this man. I feel so bad for my little zoey! I am so glad I got her out of there when I did, lord knows how long he would have let this infection go! Poor thing! And I also find it appalling that not only did this breeder sell this puppy the way she came to me. But that his Vet that signed the health certificate 2 days before he shipped her saying that she was healthy! My vet said that this infection in her ears have been there for a WHILE and the one in her eye could have happened as early as just a few days before he shipped her so his vet might not have picked up on that infection. But her ears were HORRIBLE! Last edited by Love4Bella; 05-23-2008 at 04:37 PM. |

| You can post your information in the Breeder Review section. You won't get in trouble as long as you have documentation of what your vet said (if the breeder says anything) and your observations. Once you go to the review section you will see many posts like yours...sad to say. You are right, it is sad that the vet either didn't even bother to look at the dog or could care less.

| It amazes me the conditions in which some of these babies have to live. I know it is heartbreaking for you and expensive but I am so happy that you got that little one. You have saved her from who knows what!

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | First, BLESS you for your loving and concerned and thorough post - that in itself is proof that you have all it takes to heal little Zoey . Second, I agree - posting a Breeder Review would be very helpful. If it were me, I would also be on the phone pronto to the vet who signed her form - and I'd be letting him know that I'll be contacting the licensing board - I'd be asking that vet HOW he signed a release for this baby when clearly she was a mess; I would file a formal complaint w/ his jurisdiction's licensing board. As for little Zoey - she will come out of her shell. Clearly, she was in an environment where she did not have any reason to feel safe. Over time, she will learn that she *is* now in a safe environment. A small thing you can do is take a doggie size bandana and rub it all over you and your other dog and tie it around her neck (ONLY when you're in the house, otherwise not safe to have on neck - then lay it in her bed) so your smells are right there by her nose. You could also think about buying her a D.A.P. collar - that's a collar that emits a calming pheromone and might be extremely helpful to her. Have you tried playing with her? She won't play at all yet? Will she have a chew yummy/treat? Little pieces of cereal from your hand? A GREAT book I'd recommend is called The Loved Dog by Tamar Gellar - she is Oprah's trainer - and Tamar understands dogs like no one else - and refuses to use any sort of negative reinforcement whatsoever. She also talks about how to help dogs come out of their shells, if they've been mistreated. I adore her and think she is the best trainer out there. Try not to worry - dogs are essentially made of love, so when they learn they're in a safe environment, their essency just naturally emerges - it just takes a little time. Please keep us posted on this special baby.

| I feel so bad for your little Yorkie. To me, it looks like she has been abused. i believe that you saved her life by getting her! Being already a 5 month old pup, she might not have made it . I am glad you took her to the vet and she is on medications. She will feel so much better after the infections clear up. She will probably feel like doing so much more when she is not unhealthy. I bet once she feels safe and starts to be able to trust you and her new environment she will be a lovely pet. She has been through a terrible first 5 months and I think with a lot of love and security she will be just fine. |
