I just got home from the vet with my 14 week old yorkie and have a question. I was told that yorkies need the hair in their ears plucked regularly. I had never heard of this before - is this true? She actually reached in and plucked some out while I was standing there! Yikes! I have another one who is 1 1/2 and no one ever told me that before.

this is true but how you do it beats me! lol i know thats bad to say but i will stay updated on this thread so i can learn something new too

I just use my fingers... grab some hair and pull! Honestly, my dogs have never cared about it. Just do small amounts at a time. If the dog is very well behaved you can use tweezers... but fingers have always been good enough for me.

Yikes! Well there is no way that I'm going to be able to pluck their ears....When the vet did it to show me there was yelping happening! Can we just trim it instead?

I think the hair in the ear that is meant to come out just pulls right out. The hair right around the edge I don't bother.

When I first learned of the "pull the hair out of the ears" trick & tried it, I was shocked at how simple it seemed and painless for my furbabies. It hasn't seemed quite as easy since then; not sure why. I have also heard of a powder you can get to put in their ears that makes it easier to do....maybe to get a better grip on the hairs?????? I'm not sure; haven't found the powder yet, so haven't tried it. One of my babies hasn't had hair plucked from his ears at all yet. He's going for his first professional grooming soon and I'll let her do it; at least the first time. There seems to be way to much for me to handle right now.

I didn't know there was powder for the ears when I had my first baby and I just plucked the hair in the ear, (not the hair around) with tweezers or fingers and he was fine with no yelping. But for my second baby I bought some ear powder made by R-7 you just put a tiny bit in the ear, and then pluck the hair, i use tweezers/fingers and it comes out so easy, I then follow it up by using an ear wash also made by R-7 to clean the wax out of the ear.

I think if you do leave the hair in the ear that can cause ear infections

Also, see the grooming section. Marcella has posted videos of grooming which are very good. They are a sticky at the top of the section and her pup does not flinch or move at all while she it plucking.

I have plucked Maybelline's a little and she does not seem to mind but I need to get powder so I can do a better job. It seems if you are doing it right there is no pain involved.

Educate yourself & buy from reputable breeders or rescue.
