| New Puppy...food help needed please The breeder was feeding my puppy Purina Puppy Chow. I know I need to get my pup off of this stuff. He is 11 weeks old. We just brought him home this weekend. What is the best dry food for a puppy? I do not want to feed raw. I am so confused with all the talk about to much protein causing problems. Thanks for the advice and help. |

| Whichever food you choose, make sure you make the switch gradually so as not to cause an upset tummy...I don't recommend switching cold turkey. I homecook, so I don't give any dog food, but there are many high quality foods out there that you can look into if you choose not to cook. Some of the more popular brands on this forum include Merricks, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, Canidae, Innova, California Natural, etc.

| Does he need a small bites type food? Does it have to be puppy or can it be a good quality adult food? I emailed Innova and they said I could feed the adult small bites to my puppy. |

| Well, some of the foods are All Life Stages which means that they can be given to puppies, adults, and seniors. The amount will depend on the age. For example, a puppy needs more calories than adults, so a puppy will eat more calories than an adult. Canidae, Natural Balance, and Merricks are All Life Stages foods. Here's a link that explains it: CanidaeŽ Pet Foods: Why Choose Canidae All Life Stages If you go with a food that is *not* All Life Stages, it's important to make sure that it's specifically for puppies. I believe Innova and Solid Gold have puppy foods that you can give. Small bites are always good, but some yorkies don't have problems eating regular sized pieces of kibble, so it may not be necessary for your baby.
