| Please Help Hi all, We have a female yorkie (Ava) who is 18 months old and has a variety of skin and hair issues. I will attempt to describe: Most notably her hair gets greasy, and looks like straw after a couple of days from last bath, and if you look in her bed where she sleeps, it is very dirty all the time. She does not get this dirt from being outside, she just seems to get dirty somehow... Second when she lays against your skin, she is sooooo hot to the touch, it actually feels like she is burning you. Also she has a funny smell to her, almost like a wheat smell, and if she was still on grain food, I could understand this. Constantly she is scratching through out the day and is chewing on her fur, which has become very thin. The odd thing is we have a male from the same litter, and he is just fine, no problems at all... We have had her on antibiotics for her sores when they have become infected, and a host of other medications. The current medication is Atopica from the vet, been on it for about a month, no better. We changed her food to "Core Wellness, Original Formula, Grain Free)..she has been on this for 3 months at least, not better... I would really appreciate any help that everyone's experience could give us on this, since nothing seems to be working at all... thanks Steve |

Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | Hi. Lori Pm'd me about your thread. It sounds like your girl has some serious allergy problems. Are you on the Chicken Core or the Beef? Has she had a blood panel done to see if she is lacking in something? what foods has she been eating? Have you done an allergy panel? Has she always been itchy or did it just start suddenly? if it started suddenly can you think of something you might have changed in her environment that could be causing a reaction (flea meds, new detergent, new household cleaners, new season)?

| Hi, Hi. Lori Pm'd me about your thread. It sounds like your girl has some serious allergy problems. Are you on the Chicken Core or the Beef? (it says "Regular Formula" Has she had a blood panel done to see if she is lacking in something? She has not had a blood panel done.. what foods has she been eating? She only gets the Core dog food, nothing else. Have you done an allergy panel? No to the allergy panel.. Has she always been itchy or did it just start suddenly? if it started suddenly can you think of something you might have changed in her environment that could be causing a reaction (flea meds, new detergent, new household cleaners, new season)? Her itching seemed to start when winter arrived, but before that her hair and skin were just fine. I don't know of any of the above things changing... Again, what is really concerning is how hot she is to touch... |

| hi, welcome to YT! When you say sores, what kind of sores? Does she possibly have ringworm? Or wonder if it's leather ear - which can affect more than their ears. What do the backs of her ears look like? This is a condition that can be worse in the winter. We are dealing with this right now. Here is a link to more information about this. Scroll down about 3/4 of the way for the info Alex's Yorkie Care Frequently Asked Questions. Page 3. I have been using several things to treat this. I am using an excellent shampoo I got from my vet - I would highly recommend it: Photoclens by Ayuvet from Tomer Labs - you can buy it directly from them natural herbal treatment - natural herbal treatment - tomer laboratories - natural quality herbal remedies -- this shampoo is wonderful - the dogs smell wonderful & their coats are beautiful, I may keep using this from time to time once I know for sure the condition is all gone. Here is what I found about the ingredients oils of Himalayan cedarwood Cedarwood Himalayan Essential Oil, Cedarus Deodora Eucalyptus leaf oil Eucalyptus Essential Oil, Eucalyptus globulus I am also using the tree tea oil and Lotrimin on a regular basis - we have had major improvements & new hair growing - on noses, ears, and paws

What do the backs of her ears look like? This is a condition that can be worse in the winter. She just seems to bite areas on her back and on her legs. One really weird thing about the ears is that our male dog licks her ears until they are soaked. He does this whenever she is chewing on a toy or some bone....Not sure if this can cause any type of infection or skin problems??? other than that when here ears are dry, they look normal. Thanks for the other info... We are dealing with this right now. Here is a link to more information about this. Phantom Queen Morrigan Donating Member | you can take her temperature rectally to see if she has a fever. normal is around 101-102. she is going to feel warmer to you because our temp is 98.6 and their's a few degrees higher. she also could feel warm because her skin is inflamed due to the itchiness. the wellness core original is chicken and turkey so if she is allergic to chicken she's not going to get any better on this food. However since you said it started at the beginning of winter i'm inclined to think she has really dry skin. do you use fish oil and vitamin e? if not you should get some. also, an oatmeal shampoo right now would benefit her skin. if i were in this situation first i would change her from the chicken formula to the ocean formula and add fish oil & vit e to it. And i would bath her in a gentle, soothing shampoo. I'd see how this goes for a few weeks. If she's not improving then i would take her in to the vet for a blood panel.

| Information from my wife on Ava's treatment so far I have a female, Yorkshire Terrier, Ava that was born in November of 2006. In November 2007, she was scratching herself making sores/hot spots. Her hair appeared greasy. I took her to my local vet on November 12. Her food was changed from Royal Canin to Science Diet Prescription ZD ultra. She was given a Dexanethasone injection, and put on Clavamox (antibiotic) for two weeks along with Prednisone for 5 days and half a tablet of infant Benadryl. The sores cleared up and the itching had decreased. In mid- December, the symptoms returned. She was put on another round of Clavamox , prednisone and Benadryl; along with bathing her every other day with KetoChlor. Went back to the vet after two weeks; red bumps and inflammation were still present upon close examination of her skin. My local vet referred me to a dermatologist vet. I took Ava on February 15. Skin scrapping was done and cytology came back negative. Diagnosis was 3+ neutrophils and scattered eosniphils. Was put on Clavamox for 21 days, antihistamine trial of 2 weeks of Claritin, then 2 weeks of a ½ tablet of Zyrtec as well as bathing her weekly in Etiderm. On March 21, 2008 changed the diet to a grain free kibble, Core wellness, a protein based diet. The antibiotic cleared the sores up once again. Took Ava to local vet for rabies shot and he recommended going back to bathing with KetoChlor, which the dermatologist agreed. She is bathed twice a week. Approximately two days after bathing, her hair looks greasy and is not the same texture as her litter mate. I don’t feel that the diet changes have had any effect on Ava’s skin issues. On April 10, 2008 started her on Atopica per the dermatology vet. She still scratches but doesn’t have red inflamed sores/hot spots. She is still being bathes twice a week with KetoChlor. She still scratches and has periods of time that her skin is very pink. The pink bumps of inflammation come and go throughout the day or from day to day. |
