I see I have many pages and links to read. Maybe I read some things wrong here...but....chicken, pork, WITH bones??? I thought bones sliver and can cause damage?? Eggs? Raw or cooked? With the shell, noooo, you mean broken open. Like I said, many many pages to read here, lol

Yes, bones are fine as long as the ARE NOT COOKED! but raw bones are very pliable and my yorkies do a great job on chicken bones. Pork is so so but she's not a major chewer either. My yorkie also isn't a huge lover of eggs (yes raw eggs) and won't eat the shell. Sometimes she'll eat the egg itself but becareful as too much egg can cause loose stools. But some people have dogs who will eat the whole egg and that's fine too!

Protein can be a problem for these little ones. How do you know they are not getting too much protein?
Also, is there a site somewhere that lists all foods that are able to be given to our furbabies? I'm really worried about the bones. chicken bones are small, they don't lodge in their throat? And pork bones are ok? hmmm, they seem sharp.

I've been feeding premade RAW, but after reading this thread, I'm seriously thinking of doing the prey model diet. i love this thread! so much useful information. keep it coming!

I'm kind of confused about the whole thing, honestly.

What's the difference between a Prey Model diet and just regular raw diet?


Are they both just pieces of raw meat that you give your dogs... and that equals their meal for the day?

I think you are probably thinking about everything we've always been told. And yes, if your chicken was cooked the bones would be very dangerous but raw bones are very pliable and do not splinter. Same goes for pork bones although I find alot of pork bones are too dense for my yorkie. Here is a great site that will answer all the common myths out there about a raw diet.

Prey Model is not as hard as you might think! I was so nervous about it but really it turned out to be easier than I thought!

A prey model raw diet is more specific. If I were to say a I fed a raw diet, that could mean a premade raw like you buy at the pet store. Prey model means actual raw whole items like a chicken leg or a beef heart etc. Premade raw is general a mixture of the meat, organs liver and bones all ground up and most premade raw also includes some veggies. A prey model feeder would not feed veggies and would not generally grind up meat either although in some situations, it might be done. (ie an elderly dog with no teeth). Hope that makes sense.

oh oh have a problem. I started the prey diet for Jemma on Saturday. Started with chicken, bone and all. Her stool is very very hard. This morning I saw a taint of fresh red blood. Bright, not dark. Also her stool has kinda white in it. Bone? Wondering if they are kinda nicking her rectum as she tries to poo. Was is her stool so rock hard. I'm starting to feel terrible about starting her on the prey model.

Ok, take a deep breathe. Yes, she has a bit too much bone for her tolerance. Back off on the bone. I typically feed a meal with alot of bone and then a boneless meal. You can tell by her poo what to do.... if it gets loose add some bone, if it's hard and white - yes too much bone. It really just takes a little bit of getting used to what your individual pup can tolerate and it takes her body a little bit of adjusting too. Also, once you start adding things like liver, that will soften up her poo too but you want to wait probably a good month and be sure everything is stabilized before you start liver.....
