Animal Smiley 049 My 2 year old yorkie's ear won't stand up

Yes, that's right: EAR not ears with an s. One ear is up all times, the other is down. She has always done that with an exception of here and there. Is there anything I can do this late in the game to make it stand up?

i know some breeders and show dog people "tape" them to make them stand up, even in my dummies guide to yorkies, showed how to do it properly, look it up on google and see if anyone can show you how. its supposed to get them to stand up. good luck! i may have to do this too but max is only 10 weeks so i ll give it to about one year before i do anything like taping. good luck though!

My yorkie Booboo, who is 6 years old, has floppy ears, yet I groomed him last night and took a ton on hair off his ears and his ears were up today!! Does she have too much hair? Also, my Molly (RIP) had what I called a lazy ear. Both ears would be up and then by the end of the day only one ear would be up!!

My puppy is 3 months old now, and he had "almost up" ears. The tips would flop over. The lady I bought him from had trimmed the hair on the tips to take off some of the weight, but they remained down.

I did some research on taping the ears, and decided to try it. I taped them on Monday, as instructed (like a taco), and removed the tape yesterday morning. I was told to tape them for 3 days at a time.

Well what-do-you-know! They are standing straight up! So far so good.

The vet told me that if they went down again, to just tape them for 3 more days at a time, sometimes it took repeated attempts, and also that some puppies' ears go down during teething.

I used breathable cloth first aid tape.

Have the groomer shave down the top 1/3 of the ear, inside and out, till no hair is left. Then tape the ear up so it looks like taco. (Shhhh, I used duct tape!) Leave it taped for a week or so, then take it off and hopefully it will stay up.

My 7 year old Yorkie, Sammy, had the same problem. His left ear flopped, and the vet shrugged it off with no explanation. Well, guess what? A couple of years ago, I looked at him sleeping on the sofa, and there was that ear, as perky as the right one. It's been this way ever since. I have no explanation as to why it took five years for his ear to stand up, but it happened and he looks very handsome and alert. I hope the same thing will happen with your baby.

Animal Smiley 036 5 month Yorkie has one ear flopping

Hi Everyone! I have a 5 month old Yorkie who since 8 weeks old, has had both ears stand erect, yet 2 days ago, I noticed that her left ear was starting to flop. I had not trimmed her ears, so yesterday I took it upon myself to trim some hair on the back of her ears, and today it seems to have gotten worse. I have read about taping, and might consider this, but I am hoping that this problem corrects itself. Does anyone know if it is normal for a Yorkie to all of a sudden have a floppy ear? Also, does anyone know if I should take action on this, and what it should be? Any feedback would be extremely helpful!

At her age, it could be that she is teething. That will sometimes cause them to flop down temporarily.

Hi all,

I also have a similar issue. My 1yr old yorkie's ears started flopping down a lot, whereas before they were up He already changed his teeth, at least most of them I guess. I am trying to understand what this could be and what can be done about it.... His ears are shaved by the way...

Is there some kind of food supplement that could help strengthen the ears? I saw that there was some stuff for this in Russia... but not sure how to get it here... any clue if a supplement like this exists in the US or Europe?

I am also wondering whether it is too late to try to tape them...?

How old was your yorkie when you taped his ears?

Emma has one up and one down and I love her that way-it just gives her more personality.

Milli's ears are "lazy" too-they will go up when she wants them to, but some of the time she'll only hold up one, and sometimes both. If she's tired or being passive/affectionate, they go down. They go up when she wants something or is on "alert" to something in the backyard!
