| Yorkie Getting tired of his Food Hi All, New to this site. Had a question. My yorkie who is 8 months old gets tired of his dog food. I have switched it 3x and after a week or 2 he's done with it. And will occasionally just nibble on it. He's been eating my roommate's cat food and even the cat poop!! ew. I have read it's okay to give him human food once or twice a week but not too much so that he doesnt get used to it and so that his stomach is always able to digest. So my question is how do I get him to eat regularly? Im afraid he's not getting enough in his system, and how do i stop him from eating cat poop?? Thank you so much! |

| What food have you been using? Since you didn't mention that I'll just say that in general you should be feeding him a premium brand of food. Yorkies need a nutricious, digestible food. There is no food available in the grocery store that I could recommend. You should find a food that has no wheat, corn or meat by-products in it. Also, when switching foods you should introduce it to him slowly mixing it with his other food and gradually increase the amount of the new food. I give mine just dry in the morning but mix it with canned for their evening meal. The poop eating could be that there is something he needs but isn't getting from his food. Can't your room mate move the litter box to a place that the pup couldn't get to? |

| Beneful isn't exactly a great food. Many folks here have said that Royal Canin makes their dog itchy. You shouldn't make human food his diet; he'll get too spoiled for it and won't want any dog food then. Also, some foods aren't really good for them. I stay away from feeding mine any beef and they really don't need salty foods. There is a sticky thread at the top of this forum on foods dangerous to dogs. Also, you can do a search here to see what others are feeding their Yorkies. I feed mine Foster & Smith's dry food and mix in some Pedigree lamb and vegetable for their evening meal. It really is trial and error but you should really only feed him a premium food...not something in a grocery store. You will most likely have to order it whatever you decide on. The brand I use comes in 2 varieties and I alternate them with each bag so mine don't get bored. If you pick a brand that has several varieties (flavors) it's usually pretty much the same formula but with a different meat in it so it's not like a big switch when you change varieties. This lessens the chance of upset when you switch flavors because it's not like going with a whole new formula. What I give mine comes in chicken & rice and a lamb & rice formula and alternating between them works well for me. |

| My Yorkie and several others here get a diet of entirely human food. I think it is the best you can give them or you can mix some in with kibble. If you decide to homecook, it is best to consult a nutritionist because the recipes have to be balanced and they can't have certain things. You could also feed entirely canned dog food. Healthy dog who aren't overweight can sometimes do well on cat food. It has more fat and protein in it, so it is more palatable. Cats can't live on dog food though because most of the dog food lacks taurine.

| My yorkie pup loves Innova. You may want to check online and see if your pup would like that food. Many dog food stores, feed stores, etc have samples so you can try it first and see if your fussy eater will go for it. See if your roommate is willing to put the cat food up high on a table or ledge or something....that's what I do for my cat. Otherwise, my puppy would definitely eat the cat food up and my cat would not be happy about that. My vet said that it is best to not give your puppy any cat food, so you may want to ask your vet the same question for another opinion.

| Thank you, I'll definitely look at a pet store. We live in the city so there's a lot of little pet stores here and there. I also am scheduling him for a vet visit to take out his remaining baby teeth. He's not a fussy eater. He just gets tired of his food after a week or so. I just want him to be healthy and live a long life, he's only 8 months...hasnt even reached a year! so he worries me when he's not eating!.... oh and the cat food is in a place where he cant reach it now |
