| Yorkie dandruff ... wrong brush? There seems to be alot of great products out there that I don't know about. Just wanted to see if you ladies can give me some pointers about Milo's dandruff dilema. We wash Milo a little more than we would like to. Since he's a very messy baby right now and constantly pees in his crate and steps on his own stuff (doesn't help since we step on it too since our floors make it all invisible). So anyways we kind of HAVE to bath him once a week sometimes even TWO! I use Petsilk shampoo and conditioner followed by the serum and conditioning spray. But it seems like his dandruff is getting worse. We are going to try to keep a closer watch on him from now on to make sure he doesn't get dirty. But is there any products out there that I should be aware of that can help the situation? My vet recommended this shampoo called Hylyte (not sure if I am spelling it right). She said it's so great that she recommended me using it everyday ? Also what kind of brush are you ladies using for your babies? A brand and model will help! Right now Milo is using a needle type brush I use for Archie but I think Milo's skin is a little too sensitive for it. |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm....well, there are times when skin can get irritated from what's going on from the outside. But, since skin is an elimination organ - it often show what's going on from the inside. SO, what are you feeding? Bc, there might be something in his food that is causing flaky skin. Is he itching as well? You may also want to consider Eicosaderm, which is an excellent supplement for skin/coat and overall health (fish oil + vitamin E): VetAmerica: eicosaderm

Plus, he's still a puppy right? It seems with my guys - when they were puppies, their skins were just a bit more flaky, in general, that first year...I dunno, maybe it's like human babies, where their skins go through some of textural changes/issues at times as they grow.

| Baby Chloe has dandruff with no itching. She is 8mo old. My vet said it is from growing and the skin stretching. Never heard this before, but she def. does not scratch...she is just flakey. She just got spayed and had her stitches out this AM. I think she is almost done growing and hope it clears as she gets older. I guess as long as she isnt uncomfortable(itchy) it's not a big problem.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I just noiticed Roxie has a lot of dandruff lately. I need to find a good supplement too. I use the Chris Christensen gold series pin brush and it is great. The ends are not sharp like other ones so it doesn't hurt or scratch them.

Oh did all of Roxie's baby teeth fall out yet? Milo has 2 rows of teeth! If it doesn't fall out by summer time he's going to probably have to get them pulled. | |

| brush When we first brought Kiki home I was using pin type slicker brush that I purchased at Petco. After a few days of using it, I realized that I was literally scratching the dead skin off her back with it. She was all flaky with dandruff. I tossed that brush and bought a different brush with rounded tips and she hasn't had a problem since. Anna Dog profile for Kiki, a female Yorkshire Terrier

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Roxie has lost some of her baby teeth mostly in the front. When brushing her teeth last night, I noticed some of the canine and molars are still in and adult teeth are coming in. A couple are loose so I am working on them every night to wiggle them a bit. When I get her spayed I will have them pulled.

| I love Hylite shampoos. I use their oatmeal and whitening shampoo on Lady. Did your vet say which one to use? They have many different ones depending on the condition of his skin. He may have recommended a medicated or antifungal shampoo. You need a good quality pin brush that doesn't hurt him. I have tried them all, All Systems, Chris Christensen, etc., but my new favorite is the Madan pin brush. I'll never use another brush again. It just glides through Lady's hair. She loooooves getting brushed with it. I got mine from a gal over on Spoiled Maltese who sells them at shows. They are cheaper from Cindy than they are from Lainee, Ltd. Cindy charges $16.95 plus shipping. PM me if you'd like her contact information. Here are pictures of the Madan brush: |

| Dandruff Sampoo GNC Leave it in longer Searching the internet I found out that when you use the dandruff medicated shampoo, you massage the dandruff shampoo into the dogs skin for 10-20 minutes. The dog loves it, the flakes are gone. I massage for about 10 minutes. With the oatmeal conditioner I massaged it in for about 5 minutes. Great Results. |

| I'm not familiar with Petsilk but if it has sulfate or other such chemicals in it then it may be that using it once or twice a week is too much for your dog's skin. Sulfates strip the skin despite all the conditioning ingredients put in the bottle with them. Such a shampoo may work well for a once a month bath but weekly or bi-weekly may just be too much. You could look for an all natural shampoo and conditioner that does not contain the type of chemical that strips the skin. We use Yorkie Splash and Shine products. We bathe Gracie once a week and have never had a skin problem with it. There are other recommended all natural brands out there. Just watch for the companies that advertize that their product has one or two natural ingredients but if you read the ingredient list you will find they do contain skin stripping chemicals as well. Diet can also be an issue and both elements are important to check into. Many times the "medicated" shampoos contain even more skin drying agents than the regular shampoos. Have you considered getting your pup a pen instead of a crate and training him to use puppy pads? It might mean less baths for the little guy. |
