| Has anyone tried Halo brand? Hi, Our Maddy is a very finicky eater. I take responsibility for this, as, I always give her what she wants. She knows that I will keep making her different things until something fits her mood! I really don't mind the cooking, the problem is that I am worried about her health. I had been able to get her to take a vitamin, and always cook healthy foods, chicken, brown rice, veggies, etc. However, lately she will not eat her vitamin, and she has managed to master eating around her veggies. I know that people say that if she gets hungry enough she will eat, but, it is very difficult to not give in, knowing that she wants to eat. She is 20 months old. In that time, I have tried every holistic, all natural, human grade, food I can find, just to see if there might be something that be appealing to her. The best I have done so far is to get her to eat the wellness brand dog food as an occasional snack. So, after all this, my question is, has anyone ever tried Halo? I bought some tonight, I have read many good things about it. She did eat some of it. Just wondering if it is worth trying to avoid feeding her anything else until I can get her to eat more. Any help would be appreciated. I have posted about her diet before and have tried some suggestions. It is just to hard to see her go too long without eating. Also, this is way off subject, but, does anyone know why she might be "dragging" her bum? Thanks |

So, what do you want to do long term exactly? Homecook? Kibble? Raw? Canned? I wasn't sure if you were homecooking or not - if you are, are you supplementing and everything? If you haven't been supplementing - it might explain her bum issues and/or some of her weird appetite issues too, maybe. Anyway, maybe if you could clarify a little where you'd like to go long term - then some folks could toss out some ideas...

| Thanks for your response. We home cook. I do not mind and would like to continue if I was sure she was getting the right nutrition. I normally make her chicken breast, brown rice, and carrots. I also try different recipes from time to time. She takes a supplement everyday. I order these on-line. They are human grade. The problem as I stated is that she is not taking her vitamin, she spits it out. Also, she has begun to pick around her veggies. I will continue to try different recipes. This morning I ground some chicken breast added oatmeal, flax seed, carrots, peas, whole wheat pasta, an egg, and ground one of her vitamins, I then poached in water and chicken broth, she loved it! As far as the halo, she refused to eat it, so, I will continue to try some more homemade ideas. Is there anything else that I can add to her food for some additional nutrition? Also, I think I may be feeding her too much, do you know how much she should be eating a day of homemade food? She weights 5.5lbs. As far as the scooting, I think that I will bring her to the vet to check her glands. Thanks! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Aw, thank you! That's my Marcel, and he's blushing! It sounds like you're into homecooking - so, the first question is: how are you supplementing calcium? That's the most import supplement when homecooking - is she getting that? When I was HC, I made my calcium from eggshells, but you can also by it - as in Solid Gold's Bone Meal or similar. Veggies: dogs don't need veggies, but they are fine to add to the diet. If you give them raw to retain vitamins - they should be pulverized to ease digestion. If cooked - best to steam, then puree - to ease digestion - but then you should add the multivitamin (which you are) to add in the lost vitamins from cooking. If you notice your dog poo-ing out undigested veg (ie, you don't puree) - then, basically, they didn't get anything out of that veg. So, if she picks around it - it's not too bad. Carb: again, you don't have to be too strict here, as dogs aren't dependent upon them as they are on protein. Be careful w/ things like wheat and similar allergens. Brown rice is pretty safe. Protein: most important part of meal. You should vary this - not just chicken. If you do use chicken, try to use organic. Fish is excellent as well! There are alot of recipes in the stickies at the top of this Diet Section. I've moved on to Raw, so I don't have any current recipes in mind. I used to use a sort of ratio - as in 70% protein, 15% carb, 15% veg - approximately. At her weight, maybe about 1/3 cup or so per meal, 2x per day? Start around there, then feed to condition.
