| I'm worried. Could my baby be in heat? Um, so out of nowhere my moms yorkie is being all "friendly" to my 4 1/2 month old yorkie... seriously, OUT OF NOWHERE. He is kissing her on the head and neck and stuff and licking her all around... and nuzzling, playing etc. This afternoon though, that gave way to him kinda flipping her over on her back and licking her private parts (oh this bothers me so!) and when shes standing up, he kinda pushes her into a position where he mounts her and tries to hump her. He cant "do anything" though because he wears those belly bands, and besides, shes too short. When we first got her, he was doing the dominance mounting (this is what my vet called it), but he was not licking her down there! and eventually he stopped. he hasnt done this in like 2 months! ... i asked my friend about this...about him acting so weird, and she said maybe shes in heat early or something? I dont think this is possible though, shes too young right????!

| In heat or not, I would be worried that he would work his belly band off (as male dogs often do) and damage her. Isn't she extremely tiny?

err, this is really upsetting me . i thought he was done with this. i really want him neutered but my mom doesnt want him to be because she thinks his personality will change (to be less puppy-like and hyper). | |

| does you mom know that the # 1 reason males run away is because they are chasing a female in heat ? |

| his personality may change yes... but not less puppy-like. hell actually be happier and healthier... jsut like human boys their hormones can drive them crazy. there will be no more marking, mounting, and hell live longer. instead of wanting to mount other dogs... or in some cases be aggresive which happens to some unneutered males he'll actually want to play instead!

getting a diaper would probably be a good idea... but they shouldnt be left alone unsupervised at all.. all it takes is a second to slip out of that diaper and you have a big problem.

| I've heard of dogs going into heat before 5 months before. It doesn't happen often but it has been known to happen. You'll definitely notice her vulva being swollen if she is in heat.

| I think it is possible but not probable that she is in heat. Belly bands and diapers can be ripped off and should never be counted on to stop them from breeding. I would most definately separate them until you know she isn't in heat for sure.

| Lullaby - you can have her spayed earlier then 6 months, although I'm not sure that will make a difference other then she would not get preg. Even if your mom's dog is neutered he still will have the urge. Newman my ten year old Yorkie who passed away this summer, would still get rambunctious and I'd often find him trying to mount one of the girls who were also fixed. I remember the first time it happened, I called the vet in a panic thinking it was botched or something and he said that he will still have an urge only nothing will happen. We had him done young. Anyway, I never knew you could spay or neuter so early but my little Lilly who we got from rescue was given a pediatric spay at the age of 10 - 12 weeks old. The only down side to this is that their baby teeth have not fallen out yet and if they get double teeth then they have to go back under to have them pulled as we found out last month when Lilly had to have hers pulled. if she got spayed now, she would barely be 2 pounds! i would be very nervous to do that but yeah i know they can do it earlier... when you adopt puppies they do it before you can take them home at 8 weeks | |
