| Intrusive Neuter Hello! I'm new to yorkietalk but I'm so glad I found all of you. I just picked my 5 1/2 month old yorkie from the vet, he was neutered today. She said that one testicle had dropped and that the other one was all the way in the abdomen so she made a much bigger incision and had to search for it to remove it. OMG! Poor guy. He is miserable and has a cone on his head that the vet says needs to stay on for 2 weeks. I feel terrible. Has anyone else been through this when one of the puppy's testicles hasn't dropped? How long does it take them to bounce back, eat, go potty? I would appreciate any help or advice. Thank you in advance. |

| Hi, welcome to YT!! I have heard about the problem; fortunately, my boy Kimchee does not have that problem. I understand that the incision is bigger and the operation is more complicated. I remember after Kimchee has neutured, it took him no time to recover. He acted like as if nothing had happened. As for your baby, since the incision is bigger, I would imagine it will take a bit longer time to heal. I think in no time he will want to jump and run around again. Just confine him in a smaller place, limit jumping and running around. I know that your baby is using a e-collar, but if your baby doesn't feel comfortable with it, try the onesie. It works like a wonder for my puppy girl, Mochi, after she got spayed. I hope your baby will recover soon.

| My zeus had that problem, that was 5 years ago. The vet made 2 incisions, 1 towards the anus, for the one that did drop, and one up a little further, for the impacted one. He didn't take too long to rebound. But I can't remember how long it took. What the vet told me is, if he were to breed, that trait would most likely be passed on to the babies, and if not removed, that one has a higher chance of becoming cancerous(sp?).

| Welcome to YT -- you will learn so much here! My little guy had one testical that did not drop -- but the vet was able to (gulp!) "pop it out" to get at it -- so I think his neutering may not have been as traumatic as the one you describe. My pup came home with the cone on his head, too, but I only kept in on a couple of days (he doesn't lick at himself much). He was back to his frisky little self by the third day (though he was sore for the first couple of days). He went potty normally on the first day and his appetite was fine by the next morning. These little guys bounce back suprisingly well -- I hope your little guy heals up real soon. Just give him lots of gentle snuggles and some yummy treats. Good luck!

| Beamer had one undecended testicle also. When he was nuetered, they had to make two incisions and he bounced back within 2 days. The first night he was pretty sore, but got around pretty good the next day. The 3rd day he was almost back to normal. Good luck and welcome to YT

| Thank you so much for your thoughts. He is currently ok with the e collar although I'm sure he will tire of it. I love the suggestion of a onesie....what is that exactly? Like you use for a baby? Would I just buy it in the baby department? |

| Thank you so much for your thoughts! I'm still learning how to correspond on YT so I may not post this correctly. I love the idea of a onesie....I'm guessing from the baby dept? I will get one and see how that works. He's pretty tuckered out right now....still has the tape around his leg where the vet put the IV. Anyone know how long I leave that on? |

Yes, the onesie is the one we use on human babies. I learned this trick from other YTs, it helped my Mochi thru for 3 weeks after her surgery. When you put the onesie on, put it upside down (back on the tummy side, and tummy side to the back) so that the little flip will snap on your baby's tail/back area. When he needs to go peepee, just snap it with the flip folded around your baby's little belly instead of between the legs. I bought a whole pack of 5 for Mochi from Target, so that I can have her change once in a few days. Good Luck!

| No boys here, but good luck and welcome to our site! In horses, I know the term used for this problem is called cryptorchidism -- not sure if its the same for dogs or not. Try a google search and see what happens!

| I used a onesie with my girl and it is so much more comfortable for them than the e-collar. This kind of neuter is no more invasive than a spay, so he should be just fine. He should urinate within about 12-18 hours of surgery. Poop within a couple days. Eat that night or the day after.

| Onesies Will the puppy still chew and lick at the incision through the onesie?

| We had one puppy who had this and we neutered him before placing him in his new home. The vet made an additional but very small incision to remove the retained testicle. He was feeling pretty spry in just a couple days! I do not think it would be any worse than a spay...but just give him lots of cuddles and he will be feeling better before you know it!
