| Sister and Brother mated Hello, I have just heard from a friend that her two yorkies mated and I told her that is not good. She said her female is pregnant!!!! Oh my! I don't know what she is going to do, I told her to call a vet but she is not too worried. Tell me is there anything to worry about and what is she going to do with the PUPPIES? I think they might be deformed. I have never heard of any dog mating with a family member. So please give me any advise that I can pass it on to Norma. Thank you. Susiezeus |

| You should post this in the breeder section.

| Please tell her to get her female spayed immediately if she isn't that far along.

| That's called inbreeding. I would definately have advised against it but then I guess she didn't ask for my advise! It can be really dangerous because you amplify good and bad qualities. If they have anything detrimental in their lines, which I suppose everyone does to some degree, it will have a good chance of cropping up now. It means she could definately have some unhealthy pups. Sounds like she doesn't care though, which is unfortunate..... |

| Only extremely experienced breeders who know their lines inside and out should even attempt inbreeding. I recommend having the female spayed immediately. You really do not want to take a chance by letting her have these puppies. I had a coworker that had siblings accidentally mate and she lost almost all of the puppies after birth.

| I asked her why did she let this happen and she had told me this never happened before she does have six of them. She said that she plans on getting the puppies put down. She cried and she she would never let anyone have a puppy that was a inbreed . I can say she does love her yorkies. I feel really bad for the female, this is her first litter. She looks sad. I tried to call my vet as soon as I found today but left message for him to call me ASAP. She is going to have her spayed, but not until she has the puppies. She said she did not see them mate but her female is pregnant and the brother is the only one that is not fixed. I really feel for her having watch her baby go thru that only to have them put down. When I hear anything I will post it. Susiezeus |

I'm curious why she didn't spay/neuter all the siblings beforehand? Accidents seem so frequent with intact animals. Does she know what risks there are to the female by letting her have these puppies?? She really ought to just have her spayed ASAP instead of letting the puppies be born and then put to sleep. If she's going to let them be born, she has the obligation to make sure they are cared for and given to good homes that know of the situation.

| breeding Even the most knowledgable, long time Yorkie breeders DO NOT breed full siblings...can you say.."begging for trouble"...the pups may look fine and be loaded with genetic problems to plaque them for years...the two headed, 6 legged puppy does not exist for the most part...it is the "slow to emerge" genetic problems that happen most often. I would spay the female if she is less then 4 wks along...if not find good homes and give the pups away...it is not ethcial to charge for them IMO. |

| I have to agree, have her spayed right away. If she is too far along, let her have the puppies and give them away to good homes when they are older. I certainly wouldn't let them be born only to put them down, that doesn't seem right. That alone would be very stressful and hard on the mom.

| I ask last night how far long is she and she told me she is to far long and she did take her to the vet and he told her the same thing to let the puppies be born. He also said that she should give them away after 14 weeks or longer. He will check them as soon as they are born. She is very up set. Norma told me that her husband had a heart attack in Feb. and she thinks that is when it happen. She is the one that advised me on putting panties on my females when they are in heat. And it works. Ido feel bad for them all. To much to deal with the stress is really getting to her. I will see if I can talk her into letting the pups live. |

| pups Once they are born, there is no reason to destroy them unless there is a serious medical problem. Giving them to good homes, with full knowledge of the breeding, free of charge, puts the responsiblity on the new owner....in lieu of a fee, they get the puppy...it may have a perfectly normal life for many years...or it may not..but the new owner knows it and there is no deception..they are willing to take a chance...we all take chances with puppies, unrelated or related. |
