| Pancreatis Questions Hey everyone, I know this thread should go in the health section, but I really needed some help. Tobi had diarrhia (the worst I've seen him have) and was vomiting this morning (white foam) so I got scared and took him to the vet. The vet said that it might be pancreatis, but he wasn't sure unless he ran some tests. He was suggesting doing x-rays and bloodwork which would total well over $500 CAD. I wasn't sure if those prices were normal, since this particular vet tried to gouge me before with a $1200 quote for taking 4 teeth out and neutering Tobi. SO, is it normal to pay $500 for blood work and x-ray's to be completed? I've already booked another appointment with the SPCA this Wednesday to do a comparison. THANKS!

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Did you pay $1200.00 to neuter Toby? This is excessive. I think I would find a new vet. The second quote seems high to me too. Just want to add, hope everything works out well.

| I am sorry your baby is sick. Has you pup been wormed by a vet? The reason, and cheapest fix, I ask is if he hasn't it could possibly be a woming problem. If he has been wormed has he been eating table scraps? Eating fatty foods, causes pancreatitis. Just trying to help. As far as the cost each location is so different. If you don't trust your vet I would seek out another. You said you have an appointment on Wed but the diahrea and vomiting can't wait until then. Your pup can become severly dehytrated and that alone will cause many more problems. I don't want to frighten you but I would get another vet. |

| 100 dollars for blood work About 40 dollars for an office call 80 dollars per view for xray is what I'd expect to pay. So, no more than about 300 (plus the cost of treatment). An ultrasound would be more. There is no way a vet could know it is pancreatitis without testing, especially if the dog hadn't just eaten something excessively fatty. I would test because pancreatitis can be life threatening. Ellie has had it and it is not fun. If that is the case, food would need to be pulled and your dog might need an IV. I'd go to another vet today if that is what you think it is.

| Thanks everyone for their posts! Tobi has gotten a lot better in the last day. I made sure he had enough water, but I did take his food away from him. I'm taking him to see another vet until tomorrow (one that has been recommended as reliable). He hasn't shown any signs of pancreatis since then, and is just his normal self....rowdy and playful. I opted to wait a bit so that I could see this particular vet, as the vets in my town are notorious for overcharging. Thanks again everyone! PS: nope, didn't pay the $1200 for the neuter....got everything done for $80 and yup, he's had his worming shots 4 times now

| I think if it had been pancreatitis, he would be VERY sick by now. And dehydrated. Although, maybe a mild case of it? I know that they can usually tell just by the blood test, but they like to do the xrays b/c it may be something that they can SEE in the stomach that's causing the problem (like if he ingested something that's blocking his digestive system). Max had pancreatitis once and he was really sick...wouldn't even go near any food or water and was vomiting white frothy stuff constantly. He had to stay in the vet hospital over the weekend on IV's. He's fine now but on a special diet and he hasn't had any other episodes of it since. Which is a good thing; it's very frightening to see them so sick! Good luck with your little one; I hope he'll be ok!

| Specialist also believes that renal failure is the reason for the high lipase. :-( |
