| Putting weight on my young Yorkie I just got a 10 month old Yorkie female. She needs some weight on her pretty bad. She seems to be a bit pre-occupied and possibly a picky eater (hard to tell since she is so new with us, this is her 3rd day here). She is my first Yorkie (I have Parson Russell Terriers) and I dont have a lot of experience with the breed. I feed Innova Puppy to my Russells and was thinking of feeding her the same (its what she has gotten so far, and seems to have a bit of a hard time with it. She needs some puppy teeth pulled so I am not sure if those teeth are bothering her or what?) I was going to maybe try the Evo for a little bit since the kibble is smaller and has high fat. Have any of you tried Evo short term and had issues? What about canned? I dont feed a lot of canned normally to my Russells, but if I do it is either Spots Stew or Merrick. Any other suggestions on putting weight on this little girl? You can feel every bone in her little body and if she didnt have hair she would look like a walking skeleton!!! Thanks in advance! -Amy |

| I just got a rescue yorkie - 5 years old. She weighs 5 lbs but should weigh 8-10lbs (according to the vet). My vet told me to put her on puppy food since it is a lot higher in fat content and we should see some weight gain in a short period. I think because of the high fat content, it's probably tastier to a dog and a finicky eater should be ok with it. Jasmine will eat it, but I do have to stand in the kitchen with her to make sure she stays focused on eating and not get distracted. (Plus Millie (my other yorkie) wants to eat the puppy food too) Of course because he is a vet he recommended Science Diet Puppy small bites. I took the bag (it was free) . But once I am done with it, I will see about Merricks puppy food, since Millie eats a combination of the Grammy's potpie and Wilderness Blend. My vet wants her to eat about 1 1/2 cups a day. Jassy simply will not eat that much. But I think I get about 3/4 of food in her a day.

| I wouldn't go with any Evo because it causes GI upset in a lot of dogs. How about just trying a canned food to see if she will eat? When I needed to get my Yorkie to put on weight, I gave her steel cut oats and it worked great.

| I had the same problem with my boy. He is a very finicky eater and was just so thin and lanky looking. He litterally would not eat...it was a nightmare. Someone on here recomended a product called Dyne which worked really well--its literally a sugar type suppliment that is given to all types of animals to help fatten them up. I had to use this daily for almost a month to put weight on him. When I switched his food to Natural Balance Duck & Potato (small bites) for the first time in his life he actually wanted to eat. I mix his food with the grated Natural Balance Lamb roll and a suppliment called K9 Show Stopper for his coat and he is SOLID now. I am very pleased with the resutls. I would probably stay away from Evo as I have heard that too high of protien causes kidney issues in toy breeds. Best of luck! Last edited by Bravo916; 04-02-2008 at 08:07 AM. |

I think I will look into the Dyne. And I have heard good things about Natrual Balance. Are the rolls as easy to find as the kibble? I am gonna skip the Evo then.....since everyone seems to have had issues with it. I fed it to my pregnant Russells and also after when they were still nursing and they did well on it, but I have never used it for anything other than that. | |
