| Aloe Vera Juice - Itchy Skin ?? Ok guys, I am at such a loss with Roxy and her skin issues. This has been going on for the last year. She is 3.5 yo - been to the Vet many times - tried antbi's and childrens benedryl - changed shampoo to Minksheen, no conditioner, rinse very well - bathed every 3 weeks. - she has liver issues and eats home cooked meals - no grains, no corn, no wheat, etc.... - tried coconut oil and emul oil It has gotten better, she used to have a staph infection and she used to itch and scratch herself raw. What we are down to is she scratched her arm pits and her ear (behind and top of her head). And it seems to be the most critical right after her bath. It is to the point that she is ripping out her hair and I am noticing her very thick hair to be thinning in the problem areas. I have a Vet appt. on 4/1 - to rule out Yeast Infection - but she doesn't smell so I am not sure if she has one or not. I will NOT put her on any antbis or steroids or benedryl - unless she has a yeast infection. I also think I may insist on a skin scrap though. Anyway, I thought about using Aloe Vera gel on the areas and also thought about giving an Oral Aloe Vera juice to her as well. Here's so good info: http://www.aloeveracanada.ca/av_pets.html Anyone thoughts??????? |

| I really don't have any advice but just a few random thoughts. What shampoo have you used besides Minksheen? Ever tried Oatmeal? Since it comes after a bath, it almost has to be the shampoo it would seem. But if it isn't that, what protein are you feeding? Since they can get itchy from their livers, that would be concerning. I would talk to the liver shunt group about oral aloe before using it because it might set off the liver issues.

My little Shadow Donating YT Member | Roxy, we know how miserable and frustrating this is. Bella is having same issues. We posted a thread too recently about the fact that it gets worse After the bath?? First, we tried Benadryl. Used Dawn & MinkSheen for the bath. The first Vet visit, the antibotic was given. She had little scabs on neck area. It did clear up. The second visit, she was given Temaril P which I was dubious about giving her, but it did get better, I thought . Today we have a 3:00 apt and she will have the skin scrape test. The Vet said she will look at it under a microscope and should have the results right then. We will keep you updated. This sounds so similiar. We've tried everything.....changed food to Wellness, fish oil, but changed to 3V Caps Liquids (purchased from Vet). Her coat has improved greatly, but itching reappeared! Hoping we can get our babies well!

As babies I used CC but then when she got the pimples by her privates, I tried Eqyss Medicated but that has the SLS in it so I changed to an Oatmeal/Aloe by Espree but it still didn't help, so then I tried Coat Handler and that too wasn't helping (and I gave it a really good time to work), then I tried Cranberry Fields and still no good. Then I spoke to someone who uses Minksheen and NO Conditioner, so I thought I would give it a try. Protein is cottage cheese. But I do use egg shells for calcium and she does get a little spinach egg noodles with her meals.

Another question would be, are there wheat or corn derivatives in the noodles?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hmmm...I know you've been through alot with your baby already. Off the top of my head -- have you thought about trying CC's product called Peace & Kindness - if you read the testimonials, it looks pretty hopeful - and price-wise, it may be worth a try; maybe you could call them and ask their opinion: http://www.chrissystems.com/peace.htm I know Marcel's nutritionist works w/ a lot of skin issues, so I don't know what she'd tell you - or if you'd be interested, but her info is here: www.askariel.com. (I would say the spray would be good if you think it's purely topical; whereas a nutritionist would be good if you think the skin is acting as an elimination organ, therefore, it's deeper)

After she gets dried I have to apply Skin Works from Coat Handler, it is the only thing that 'helps' somewhat. By the time 3 weeks rolls around her problem areas seem to look better, but then it's bath time and it starts all over again. Believe me, we are at a better point. As far as the water. I bathed her in AZ too and it also happened there. I will have to check the label about the egg noddles, I think there may be soy something or other in it

Thanks - I will look into that product. Also I have been to the site of your nutrionist. It looks very good, but I am concerned about Roxy's liver issues. I am planning on consulting with a nutrionist, but I may go the route of someone at Cornell University. My head is spinning. I don't want to keep playing a guessing game with her. I have tried so many things and I am so worried about hurting her liver more. That's why I thought about Aloe Vera - b/c it is all natural and pure

Crusty ears sometimes means mites and that would go with the armpits. I think they can get worse (itching) after warm water touches the skin. I would definately have them do a skin scraping. What flea med (if any) do you use?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | She does work with a ton of liver patients - but - Crystal (aka "EllieMay") actually works with a nutritionist as well, so she may have some add'l insight too.

The thing about skin scraping is sometimes the mites get away and it comes back negative while they do have them. The treatment for sarcoptic mange is a large dose of Ivermectin (which would be horrible on her liver) or treatments with the normal dose of Revolution but sometimes this doesn't work. I don't like Revolution but if it works, then I'd do it. Hopefully this isn't it though. Telltale signs of sarcoptic mange are crusty ear tips, fierce itching, and hair loss, particularly on the ears, elbows, legs, and face in the early stages. Later on, the hair loss spreads throughout the body. http://www.canismajor.com/dog/mange1.html I would think TJ would have it too though.

| TJ is uneffected. He eats the same food and get bathed the same way. He has his normal scratches. He has OCD though and he bites his nails and sometimes licks his paws in the middle of the night |

| We've been dealing with these issues with Stella for the last few months, she scratches her neck, armpits, back legs and flanks (she plucked the hair out of) This is what we have tried so far oatmeal shampoo Chlorpheniramine (antihistamine) reacted to with diahrrea *stopped* Skin scrappings (no mites) they scrapped several areas Relief Shampoo (bathe 2 x a week) Relief Spray (use between baths) *stopped* hydroxyine (antihistamine) allergic reaction to * stopped * cephalexin (anti-biotic) 10 days Sulf Oxy Dex shampoo ( 1x a week w/this and 1 x with Releif shampoo) Atopica pills (cyclosporin) currently on Genta Spray (mild steroid spray used directly on itchy areas) 7 day use only and another 10 days of cephalexin At this point the scratching has improved but she appears more lethargic...which I don't like. A wonderful YT member told me about Depo-Medrol which is a monthly injection which I'm going to talk with my vet about. |
