| Vaccination question for adult found yorkie Well, I am slowly getting myself organized here and over the initial shock of having my little Madison here! I want to get him started on his vaccinations and since I have no idea what he's had, if anything; or when; I called the local shelter and the lady there said to start him on the normal puppy schedule of vaccinations. This is what they give and the schedule: 1st DHPPC 1st Deworm 8 weeks 2nd DHPPC 2nd Deworm 1st Bordatella 11 weeks 3rd DHPPC 2nd Bordatella 14 weeks Rabies 16 weeks Does this look appropriate to you? I wish I could get his rabies sooner, but does anyone know if I can? He's not a puppy for sure. And somebody mentioned something about a "6 in 1" shot that could be given to dogs who haven't been kept up on their vaccinations. Does anyone know anything about that, or if it would even be safe for a Yorkie? He's only about 3-4 lbs at the moment, but I'm sure he's going to be 5 lbs when he's filled out from not eating for so long and I don't think it's going to be long the way he eats! I have to have to wait for a couple of weeks to have him neutered anyway, and I think he has to have had all his vaccinations before he can have that done, so I want to get going ASAP! Thank you for any guidance! Seana

| Your going to keep him? I was wondering how he was doing? I am not sure about shots for rescued yorkies...but whenever I have adopted a dog from the pound they would just start the shots from scratch. So that schedule is probley about right. What about doing a titer test? That will be able to show what shots if any he needs boosters on. What does your vet say?

| I think you'll have to go with your vet on this because there is more than one right way. I've heard if you vaccinate after 16 weeks, you only need to do 2 sets. I also think one of the most knowledgeable people on this subject only vaccinates his animals once or twice in a lifetime. If it were my dog, I'd probably do 2 sets of DHPP 4 weeks apart. I wouldn't give "C" and I'd give the rabies either two weeks after the last DHPP or maybe in the middle of the two (depending on what your vet prefers). You may need to do 3 sets of DHPP if that is what your vet thinks but I just see no reason to. I don't like bordatella either, but if you want to give it, I just wouldn't give it on the same day as any other shot. One shot per visit and some people even prefer to not do combos at all (DHPP) but split those up too...

Anyhow, I want to get him vaccinated b/c I don't know what he's had if anything and he's around my dog...plus, if his owner isn't found in a months' time (that's 2 weeks from today), I am going to have him neutered as soon as I can, and he has to have had his shots for that. I am not taking him to my current vet, b/c I don't like her and never really have. I just found out that the office was bought out by another company and all their rates have almost doubled.....which was plenty of fuel for me not wanting to go there anyway. So now I have to find a new vet and get them both in. Our low cost vaccination and neutering clinic (which is very good; I'm on their auxiliary and have done some volunteer work there) is where I'm taking him. I just haven't had time to go chat with vets lately and don't want to get this one started with my old vet.

Thank you! I guess I'll see what they suggest when I take him in. I know that my old vet never gave the Bordatella b/c Max doesn't usually go to dog parks, but he DOES go to the groomer's and when he does, there's almost always a lot of dogs there and he's there for several hours (usually about 4)....would that make any difference? I didn't think about that until I was taking him in one day and it struck me that this might be just as bad as a dog park. It's a very upscale shop in a very upscale neighborhood, but it only takes one dog.... Why would you not give the "C"? Isn't that coronavirus? When Max had his shots, I just got what they told me to get!

| Corona virus isn't usually dangerous and the vaccine is worthless to me. Try to tell a vet that though. Usually people who use the groomer do vaccinate for bordatella. Your dog can get kennel cough with or without the vaccine. Some people believe it is less severe if they are vaccinated but who knows. I do as few as possible, so I'd personally try to avoid it but whatever you are comfortable with...

| Luckily, my vet is open to discussion. I don't give Corona or Bordertella....the research doesn't support the risks and it is becoming apparent that you can over vaccinate and we have cut back our shots to 3 yrs instead of one. My vet gave me a hard time about home cooking....but not because he was being difficult...when questioned...he admits that very little attention is given to the topic in vet school. He was concerned about it being nutritionally balanced (you could make cardboard nutrtionally balanced if you add enough to it) so I had him do bloodwork and ever since then, he does not fight me on it. |

| If he's an adult, he does NOT need 4 rounds of vaccinations. One vaccine should be sufficient for an adult dog - 2 if you just really want to be overly cautious. I would only vaccinate for Parvo, Distemper, and Rabies. You might want to vaccinate for Bordetella depending on where you plan to take him. The only reasons puppies get 3-4 rounds of vaccinations is because they are started early when maternal antibodies are still present. An adult dog does not need to go through several rounds of vaccinations.

My vet told me the same thing when I asked about home cooking and the best diet for my dogs. She thought that home cooking was good if done right, but also thought that good dog foods offer all the nutrition necessary. She said that very little attention is given to nutrition in vet school. I hope that improves as time goes by with so much attention on pet nutrition. | |
