| Itchy ear... Hi all. Newbie here. Just got my little Kobe 1 month ago (he is 4 months) and am noticing that he scratches his ear often (well not that much but I do notice it more and more). I asked a friend about it and they told me to pull his ear hair out (wax buildup). My little guy hates it and won't let me hold him that long, and when I do pull them out he screams so I stop. Is there any other suggestions to help him out with his itchy ear? Any advice would be greatly appreciated |

Donating YT 10K Club Member | Ear scratching can be a sign of mites. Your vet can prescribe drops to get rid of them. When plucking ear hair...you can sprinkle some baby powder in his ear and it helps it come out more easily. Just pull a tiny amount at a time. Or the vet can do this for you also.

| His ear smells a little, but not that bad. He is on Eukenuba as the breeder had him on it, but I am planning on switching very soon after finding this site and seeing what everyone else is feeding theirs. Do you think its the food? bchgirl- i will try out the baby powder option. I don't think he has mites but I'll definitely have the vet check it out next visit. Thanks for the advice. |

| Although Eukanuba isn't good, it probably isn't the food because he is so young. I would wonder about an infection or mites, especially if it smells at all. What color "gunk" are you pulling out, if any?

| Thanks for the quick reply Ellie. There is really no color on the gunk on his hair that I pull out, but I do notice some ear wax on the end of it. |

Take a q tip and swab his ear....not deeply. If you see a dark color on the swab, it's likely mites. Does he cry at all when scratching? Wax in his ear may make it smell some, but it really shouldn't cause him to scratch. It could also be an ear infection. For wax build up my vet recommends ... mixing equal parts peroxide and water...a teaspoon and put in his ear with a dropper. Massage gently...then allow him to shake his head.
