| Help, Picky Eater? Louie doesn't want to eat any food of real nutritional value! He will eat the cheap stuff that is made of crap with no problem. I bet I have gone through 7different good brands! I am getting frustrated with the search for a food he will eat. I have tried just leaving the food out there until he eats it, but I sometimes get worried b/c it will take him 3 days to eat 1/2 a cup of food! Is there something I can put on his food to make it more appealing to him that is healthy for him? Should I give in and get him crap? I don't know what to do.

| Have you tried both wet and dry? Try these they are like doggie crack for Milo he would do anything to get it. Either Dick Van Pattens Natural Balance food roll, or Merrick canned wing a long or grammies pot pie. |

| The only thing I can cook is cereal. How much of these things would be okay to add to his food? How much wet food should I add? I have tried mixing the wet food, but he eats it and not the kibble.

It is perfectly safe to do that.

| What is a good brand of wet food? Are they the same as the good brands of kibble? I have been hesitant to do that because I am concerned about his future dental health.

| My Harley is a really picky eater as well. I had the hardest time finding him treats that he liked. Even the cheap treats he wouldn't touch! He likes his food though, Canidae All Life Stages, which is a great food for them! And as for treats.... Yorkie Yummies! They are made by Chattiesmom on here and they are great for them and the only treat Harley will touch...and then beg for more! No joke! BTW, kibble is very important for their teeth!!

Some people (including me) believe that the common "kibble is good for their teeth" thing is a myth. There have been some studies on it but they were flawed. The kibble breaks when it hits the tip of the tooth, so it does next to nothing. Dental kibble works but most companies don't make that. Canned food may or may not build up tartar faster but whatever you feed, it is so important to brush. Ellie ate mostly kibble for a few years and her teeth started falling out, so it didn't do her a bit of good. Now, after she had her teeth cleaned, I brush them everyday and use OraVet. She eats mostly soft food (homecooked) and they stay pretty clean. In fact, the wet food is a good idea anyway becase their bodies could really use the moisture. If you'd like to read more about kibble and teeth, you can order Small Animal Clinical Nutrition Fourth Edition by Thatcher, Hand...

| Help, Picky Eater Thanks for letting us know that they don't have to have kibble for healthy teeth. I have tried to make Tricksie eat it by mixing veggies with it, now I will not worry about it.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | ^^^^Agree w/ Crystal as far as dental. Canned food is better for them nutritionally - it is so much less processed than kibble. You could also mix the 2, some do that. You could give non-consumable bones for dental health/chewing. You could use Petzlife gel. But yes, def. try a premium canned food like Natures Variety, Evangers, Wellness - those should be pretty tasty for him and very good for his health too. And, just remember, if kibble cleans teeth - then we should throw away our toothbrushes, trash the dentist, and start noshing on triscuits to clean our pearlies.

| Hello Louibug and all... I have spent the last 3 years and tons of money trying to get Sheba to eat the nutritional dry food. I've tried everything on the market and some that aren't and she will not eat it. I feed her canned (Canidae) at dinner time which I warm up and drizzle boiled chicken on to entice her but I want her to eat kibble (cereal) during the day and she may nibble but she won't go near the healthy brands. I mix them with her "crappy" food and she'll pick out the quality stuff no matter what I drizzle on it or mix it with...she just won't do it! You're going to hear "your dog won't starve itself" and "it's because Mommy's spoiling him/her" and all sort of standard lines. I've also been accused of not giving her enough time to "give in". I hear the words to the song "if loving you is wrong, I don't wanna be right". Yes, we care too much but we eventually find a nice middle ground. Experiment but decide early on how far you'll go before you both agree on the middle ground because I went WAY too far! One important thing I found out in the last 3 years that I think is good to keep in mind is to keep their feeding as simple as possible. I wound up in the hospital and realized NOBODY knew how to feed Sheba. I had to orchestrate it over the phone with my family and the nurses were having a fit!! So, the more complicated it is, the more worry that may come your way. K.I.S.S. I have also found that Sheba gets to the point where she's so hungry that she can't get started at dinnertime. She likes to eat once a day, just like some people. I give her a few bites by hand to get her started which everyone says is so bad. Oh well... I have other breeds of dogs and none are as "special" as my yorkie and not even close to being picky like her but then again, none of them stand on top of my chest and kiss me like there's no tomorrow or curl up in my husband's armpit to sleep for the night. Maybe it's the breed or maybe it's because they're so stinkin' cute that we alter their behavior and make them so picky but I don't think we would have them if we weren't qualified for the job...I just don't think God would give them to just anybody. So, do what works for you guys and I wish you luck. At the very least you know you're not alone. |
