Vectra 3D - Do not use I must confess I do not own a yorkie, but do own a 3 year old very healthy cockapoo. In our area we have not had a long stretch of cold weather and hence still have fleas. I went to my local Pet Smart and asked for Frontline, they told me I needed to get that from the vet (they have a Banfield Pet Hospital inside the Pet Smart). I proceeded to ask for Frontline at this "vet" counter and the gal recommended Vectra instead. She specifically said it was to be gentler on the animals yet killed the fleas faster. I took it home and administered it to my dog. 12 Hours later she was terribly lethargic. She is my best friend, follows me everywhere, down to get laundry, back up to put it away, etc. All day Saturday into Saturday night, she would not move, would not eat, would not get up to go out, would not follow me etc. Thankfully by Sunday she was beginning to bounce back and by Monday back to normal. I called my normal vet on Monday morning and was told that my vet has heard too many negative side effect around Vectra and does not endorse it. Please do not use this on your pets, cockapoos or yorkies alike! I returned the unused doses for a full refund. If you have it and have not used it, don't!

And, welcome to YorkieTalk. You don't have to own a Yorkie to post. Isn't Vectra Fipronil (Frontline) and permethrin mixed? There is an extra ingreient in it and a very harsh one at that. I don't see how it could possibly be easier on them. There may be less reported side effects because it is new...

Did you know that Dryer sheets can be rubbed on your pet and this will act as a repelant to fleas, mosquitos. Im like Ellie May. I like going as natural as Posible. In our area we have Lots of Mosquitos..I rub them on myself also and they work great, while my coworkers use OFF.

Vectra 3D Ok, so here is my input on Vectra 3D. I finally decided to get a puppy (I grew up with them but knew I should wait until I was stable to get my own as an adult) which happens to be a purebred shih-tzu. I luv my Mater and decided I wanted to keep him as protected as possible. My vet said this was my best option due to having neighbors that aren't as concerned with their dogs fleas, etc. as I am. Now my shih-tzu luvs being outside........ anyhow I am getting side-tracked. This is his 3rd month on it and I just found 4 baby ticks and a large one from just playing outside off and on today. I have found fleas over the whole 3 months. I know they were from today seeing as how he is brushed daily to prevent mats etc in his hair. So I am calling the vet tomorrow and having this replaced with frontline which the breeder told me from day one I should have gotten. is my vote on this "awesome new product". hmph. i am so upset that my puppy has gone through this today

Vectra :( Hi everyone! I have an eight month old yorkie who has been on flea medication for four months and I have not had a problem until I started using Vectra. I take Bailey to Banfield in the local Petsmart where I was given a free dose of Advantage for signing her up for her pet insurance through them. Very soon after, due to an minor issue for a regular visit, I was given another free dose of flea medication, this time being Advantix. Just shy of a month after application of the Advantix, I started to notice a flea or two. Being just a few days short of a new application, I went to Banfield to make my first true purchase of flea medication. The vet insisted I tried Vectra because it was the latest and greatest. Unfortunately, after about two weeks I noticed two fleas on her. I treated the carpets, and according to the vet, this type of flea activity was normal and that after my second dose of Vectra the problem would be fixed. Instead, my dog continued to be covered in fleas for the last two weeks of the month. On the first of April, I applied my second dose of Vectra to Bailey, and treated the carpets again. She was to my knowledge flea free until yesterday, exactly two weeks after application. As far as I can tell, at least for my dog, Vectra is only effective for two weeks, and the other two weeks out of the month my dog has to suffer. Instead of using the third dose of Vectra, I am planning on buying Frontline for May. Has anyone else had this issue with Vectra?

I love my pets just as much as anyone. I have tried several different flea medications with a different reaction each time. Frontline seemed to not work for fleas. Revolution was ok but tend to cause them to "go crazy". I have tried Advantix and the reaction was less however they still went a little crazy. I have not tried Vectra 3d yet and was looking for reviews on it. So I appreciate all your guys input on the subject. From what I have learned working in a animal hospital is that reactions are different for each pet. Same as humans. I'm not going to say Amoxicillin is a bad antibiotic just because it made me vomit. It was my reaction due to my body not cause the product is bad. My suggestion is to try each product. Just please dont use over the counter drugs from walmart etc. Sargets flea products have caused many pets severe reactions. And from what I know all flea preventative has a "pesticide" in it. If you dont have problems with ticks try comfortis. it may cause vomiting but is very effective against fleas.

| My Conner just came back from the vet. He has anaplasmosis (from a tick bite). He was on Revolution but has been having so many ticks on him lately. I got Vectra 3D because it repels and kills fleas and ticks. Conner had two shots today, and will be on Doxycycline for 28 days.

I am very confused about Vectra 3-D as well. I put it on my 4lb Moose 2 1/2 weeks ago (prior to Vectra he was on Revolution) and since then I have found more than 5 ticks on him, as well as 5 fully engorged ticks that had already released! I am extremely worried about all of the negative disscussions about the Permethrin pesticide in Vectra! It also doesn't seem to be working that well since I am still finding so many ticks on him. We have tried Revolution, and now I'm scared of Vectra- I have heard horrible things about K-9 Advantix, what about Frontline Plus? I feel like there is nothing left for us to try!

It comes down to what works for your dog and use the least amount possible. I don't like Revolution either, so I'm picky I guess. Frontline Plus is fine (doesn't mean it can't be toxic over time), but some of the other products may control ticks better. It's worth a try though.

major reaction to Vectra 3D I have been doing research online about Vectra 3D since my dog became VERY sick Sunday. I saw your research about the product and thought I would let you know what happened to my dog. I have a 5lb Maltese/Yorkie/Poodle/s**tzu mix named Frankie. He is 18 months old and full of energy. I usually use Revolution for puppies and kittens on him. I sent my fiancé to the vet to pick up more and the vet gave him Vectra 3D for some reason. They didn’t ask him if he wanted to try something new. They didn’t even tell him they were giving him something new (which makes sense now that I’ve read what you said about vet’s making more money on this product than others). I told him to get the same stuff as last time and the vet would know from Frankie’s chart so I’m a little ticked they gave us Vectra instead. This was on Friday October 16th. They gave us the 2.5-20lb dog dose. I thought that was quite a wide range of weight for dogs so I only applied half the tube (although the instructions did not mention anything about lowering the dose for smaller dogs). I sent Frankie to my mom’s house for a few days while I was working and within about 6 hours she started noticing a personality change. He is normally very energetic and LOVES playing with her puppy (same breed) and loves to be held but for some reason he was just running to his kennel and acting a little neurotic. On Monday she gave him a bath and took him to the vet at which time she noticed even after the bath that the spot where the Vectra was applied was still oily. The vet did an exam and found that he had developed a “hot spot” where the Vectra was applied and had developed a bacterial infection from scratching it. They gave us an oral antibiotic and a topical ointment and sent him home. He has now been on the meds since Monday mid-day and last night he start breathing really fast and heavy and shaking. His heart rate was 136 and had about 120 breaths per minute. I got online and started researching Vectra and its effects on small dogs. Apparently this is not an uncommon reaction and can be caused by the Dinotefuran and the Permethrin. On the two forums I visited there were even a few people whose small dogs have died from it. Most of the things I read had to do with toxicity relating to the Permethrin. All of the side effects had to do with breathing, shaking, seizures, drooling, depression, and liver damage etc. which were all things Frankie was doing last night (with the exception of the seizures that I could tell… and I don’t know about the liver damage…) I called the emergency vet clinic at my vet’s office and they told me that he was probably just stressed from the infection and they had never heard of Vectra poisoning a dog, but I will never use it again and I am telling everyone I know that have small dogs to stay away from it. Frankie is at home today with my sister and if he starts shaking and breathing funny again she is taking him in to the emergency vet. They told me on the phone last night that all they would be able to do for him is hook him up to fluids and let it run its course so I decided to keep him home and made sure he was drinking plenty of water. Anyways… just thought you would want a little more info on the effects it can have on small dogs. If you care to know I will let you know what happens over the next few days with Frankie…

My vet switched to Vectra 3-D and I bought it. I returned it before I used it when I saw Permethrin in it. I would never use this product with that horrible pesticide in it. Just read on line about Permethrin and you won't want it on your dog, any dog, as well. I'll stick with Fronline Plus if I have to use something. Buddy does fine on it. I stop in Nov - April giving his body a break as well. Never a problem.

info on Vectra... This is the research I was referencing about Vectra in my last post... sorry, I just copied the email I sent to the person who wrote this article... Very interesting about the ingrediants of Vectra and other Insect Repellants News about new Vectra 3D spot on This article also made reference to the reason vets are starting to push Vectra - since it's not an over the counter drug and you can't get it online, it's Vet only, they make more money on it... too bad they aren't doing the research on it's side effects!
