| Second thoughts on neuter Well. I decided to finally get Tucker neutered. I didn't do it at 6 months when they said I should have because I was scared for him to go into surgery and thought he would be just fine without being neutered. Well, he has now started to mark things, even in the house Before doing this he was perfectly potty trained to go outside. He still does to actually pee, but when there is something new in the house he goes over and lifts his leg! So I decided I should have him neutered. I'm having second thoughts though. Maybe those of you who have neutered an older puppy could help me out? Tucker was born January 14 2007. So he is about 14 mo. old. At this age will neutering really change anything? I mean, is it realistic to think that neutering him will stop him from marking things, etc.? Any advice, suggestions, or stories about your experience would be greatly appreciated! I am also interested in knowing if there are any bad side effects from neutering that I should know about. Thanks!!!! ~April & Tucker

| I'd be interested in replies on this topic too. We are planning the same when Max is six months old. |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | My Teddy was 2 when I got him neutered and it helped. Training stopped him from lifting his leg in the house but he still marks everything outside. He actually has a better attitude since he was fixed. He became much sweeter and less if not non-agressive.

| Thank you, for the reassurance. We weren't quite sure. |

Donating YT 1000 Club Member | Your welcome, I would not want a non-neutered male in the house. I know some can train them not to lift there legs and mark everything but I think it is so much easier with a neutered male.

| It could help the marking but there is no guarantee. Yes, there are plenty of side effects to neutering that are rarely talked about. I think people like to say that it prevents testicular cancer but don't like to talk about the down side. You can google it and see the possible side effects. The benefits outweigh the risks when talking about spaying, but it is a different story when you're talking about neutering. There is a 50% chance that a unneutered male will get testcular lumps and have to be neutered anyway though, I believe. These are quite often benign but can be cancerous.

| Hello, I was going to mention that. Max's vet also said it helped protect against testicular cancer, but I'm new to Yorkie Talk, and I didn't want to come across as a know all. There are still so many things I'll have to learn from members with the experience I don't have yet. |

| it's instinctive and a bad habit to break. i know most on y/t won't agree with me , but at his age i doubt he will stop marking. i would not do it. why put him through surgery and pain? get some belly bands. feel free to pm me at any time. i have a 4 yr old that's not neutered. he is healthy and happy, but needs to wear belly bands. next puppy will get neutered at a young age, but my vet told me once they start marking it won't stop.
