Anyone else heat up the raw food???? I know this is probably a crazy question.... but I'll try anyways I put Zoe on NV Raw and she absolutely loved it for about 2 or 3 weeks. Then forget it. So I tried some different kibbles and she's just been really picky. Likes it for a few days then turns up her nose. So I started the raw again and the first morning she ate it no problem but after that, she turned up her nose. So I popped it in the microwave for 15 seconds and it starts to smell good like a grilled hamburger and then she'll eat it. So I'm wondering if anyone knows if this compromises the health benefits of the raw food by microwaving it and if anyone else has a quirky yorkie like me?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Oh, I just hate that when they turn into Miss Pickypants - Wylie never does that, but Marcel's pallette can rival that of Miss Julia Child, I swear. Well, I have read alot that microwaving meat can actually change it's makeup - so you're probably changing its protein chains quite a bit by micro-ing it. What you could try instead is just searing it for about 5 secs each side. If it were me, what I'd instead try (to preserve the raw nutrients) is use canned/mashed potatos (those I micro, I'm not as much concerned w/ simple carbs) - mix some in WITH the raw medallion. That can be quite enticing - and you'll maintain the superior nutrition of the intact medallion.

I warm mine up slightly...about 10 seconds, just to take the chill out of it. I've done this with Chloe' for over a year. It is the only way she'll eat.

Don't cook it.... No microwaving, pan frying, baking, etc etc. It's not just that it affects the nutrients, it can actually make it dangerous. There's bone in there. Cooked bones cause problems (perforations, impactions, etc). It doesn't digest easily like it does when raw. If there's a chunk of it in there (which sometimes there is), it has the potential to cause problems if it's cooked. If you need to warm it up, add some warm water. That'll take the cold edge off without cooking it.... Or warm a high quality canned food (like NV's Instinct) and mix that in with the raw.

raw My yorkie (Dixie) is so very picky too! My vet said I could microwave canned food just enough so that it isn't cold (but not enough to be warm). The only thing I wonder is if you are feeding raw (which Dixie loved for about 2 weeks then was board with it) and it has bones (even ground ones) it might not be good. If it starts to smell like hamburger, it is definitely cooking so it's not really raw anymore. Julia

You can also leave the food on the counter till it reaches room temperature. A couple of my dogs were being fussy about their fish the other day and I sprinkled a tiny bit of parmesan cheese on it and they gobbled it up. Silly dogs - sometimes they are so easy to fool.
