| Terrible Breath! Can anyone lend their input on awful Yorkie breath and teeth? Our little Lola will be a year old this month, and her breath has been just evil since the day we brought her home! Is one year old too young to have a dental cleaning? Is this something I should plan to do annually? Lola's our first Yorkie and a very special girl indeed. I don't want to put her under anesthesia unnecessarily. Thanks! |

| Welcome to YorkieTalk Usually the baby teeth are removed during spay/neuter. They can cause very bad breath and bite alignment problems, along with infection if they aren't removed. A few Yorkies lose all of their teeth on their own, but not often. Did she have baby teeth removed? Are any still in there?

| Thanks! This has been my first post! She did have 2 teeth removed when she was spayed last fall. To my novice eye her mouth looks just fine, and she doesn't seem bothered when we play with her snout or open her mouth to look around. Any thoughts on good breath-busting doggie mints? |

| If all of her teeth are nice and white, you could just start brushing. I use CET vanilla mint toothpaste and brush once a day. I didn't brush when Ellie was younger and she ended up with periodontal disease and had to have nine teeth pulled, so I recommend brushing.

| I just brought Isabelle for her first dental cleaning. Her breath was just kickin! I am guilty for not brushing her teeth. So many of my friends who have dogs say they never have to brush and they have no problems. Is it just a Yorkie issue? The vet said Isabelle is in the beginning stages of periodontis disease. She said out of 6 stages, Isabelle was a 2. The worst were her back teeth. Her gumline was red and would bleed a bit when I tried to brush. They cleaned her real well and they gave me some dental polish to take home. I have to polish her teeth once every 2 weeks. |
