| preoperative testing Hey guys, So I posted this on the breeder forum but I wanted your opinion as well. My Lila is a 8 months old is scheduled for her spaying on 3/21. My vet suggests I do a bile acid test before the surgery (no other bloodwork has been done). But I really can't afford this test but I'm nervous about the risks of anesthesia. Has anyone done the surgery without testing? Should I even risk it? Also, I'm doing the surgery at a low-cost spay clinic in my area. What do you guys think of these clinics? They didn't even mention anything about preoperative testing other than a physical exam. Please give me advice because I'm very nervous. -Lila's mom

Donating YT 30K Club Member | I always have the pre op bloodwork done whcih is about 60.00. If at all possible I would get the preop bloodwork done as it determines if they can withstand the anesthesia. I know it's hard when you don't have the extra money.

| I've always done the pre-op bloodwork before any of mine went under for anything. It just lets you know everything is o.k. for them to go under. I've always done the pre-op blood panel though not a bile acid test so you might want to ask about the difference and what each one is for. Personally, I wouldn't risk anesthesia without doing the bloodwork. |

| I will not let Ellie have surgery without it and the bile acid test is a very good thing to do too. It sounds like you have a good vet. It is very important to me that Ellie's vet does all of her surgeries. Low cost clinics may be okay but do they even offer blood tests? Do they do surgery on a heated surface? Do they give pain meds? What anesthesia do they use? Isoflurane or Sevoflurane? Is someone that just got out of vet school doing the surgery?

Spend the money. Get the test. Don't learn a lesson the hard way. It's not worth it.

I hadn't heard that before. It is scary to think who is doing the surgery in some of those places.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | YUP. Needless to say, when it was Marcel's turn (4 years later) - I was a wreck....but trusted my vet so much more bc we were already frequent flyers at her practice, obviously. LOL.
