| anual glands? what is this Ok so I took my Chewy into the groomers just to see what the price is and what is involved, I give him a bath once a week but would like to get his nails and face trimmed. They said that they still have to bath him will cut his nails trim him and take care of his anual glads. So I went to my favorite place google that sounds very painful to have done, and do all dogs need to have it done? I actually probably would prefer the vet to take care of that but I am not really sure if he needs it done how would you even know?

| Groomers regularly express anal glands, but I really wish they didn't. Most dogs express their anal glands naturally when they poop. I have never had Lacy's anal glands expressed, and she has never had any problems with them (she is 3 1/2 years). Anal glands should only be expressed if they become a problem...if they are full and dog can't express themselves or they become impacted. You'll notice your dog scooting it's butt if this happens. Once you start expressing them regularly, you will have to continue...and I think its dangerous...you can cause the anal sphincter to start losing tone. Plus, groomers usually do it the wrong way...squeezing from the outside. The correct way is the express from the inside. If my dog ever develops a problem with her anal glands, it will be expressed by a vet the correct way.

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | Joey had this problem as a puppy. He was scooting on the floor and seemed so uncomfortable. The vet showed me how to do it, and you need to be very careful or you can push the liquid farther in instead of expressing it. This can cause a serious infection. He needed it expressed about every 2 weeks for the first year. Apparently, he wasn't pushing hard enough after a bowel movement to release the liquid. The last 6 months have been fine; I guess he outgrew the condition.

| I just posted a few days ago regarding this topic. Cody was scooting and just soooo miserable. I took him to the vet because I was so concerned not knowing if he was injured since he just wasnt walking right. The vet checked all possibilites before he went for the anal gland. And it was impacted, he just told me to observe and if it happens again he would do an xray to see what would be causing the blockage. He is fine now, I just keep my fingers crossed and hope for the best.

| Giving them a raw carrot to eat as a snack helps to keep the anal glands clear. |

I wouldn't let a groomer do it as part of their program. Ellie's vet was saying that the dogs she sees with anal gland problems are the small ones the go to the groomer and get them expressed. There are always exceptions and reasons to express them but not just because it is on the list of things to do. We even take this a step further with Ellie. Ellie scoots sometimes and she can even smell like the stuff sometimes (by her tail). The vet felt them and said they aren't that big and she wouldn't do it right now. There is a fine line between not doing it and doing it because their is a risk for impaction. So really it is between you and your vet and sadly too many vets think it's a good idea to do it routinely. They are glands. Glands want to be full. They are just going to fill right back up again anyway.

if it hasent gotten to the point where you can smell it, sometimes around the bum, it can look swollen. the best bet is to take them to a vet to check though. | |

I ♥ Joey & Ralphie! Donating Member | I could never smell Joey's problem, but he scooted a lot, and the area had a bulge to it. Again, this is something that needs to be checked by vet. Let him/her guide you on this. Here's a good link: http://www.marvistavet.com/html/body_anal_sacs.html

| Anual glands thanks for all the info First I want to say thank you for all the great info. I truly felt that it was kinds weird that the lady (groomers)said that was part of the routine and that they do that everytime, I was nervous. Well I had not brought Chewy to get groomed yet but I know that I will make sure that the groomers do not express that anual glands. He seems to be doing just fine no scooting no smell and he gets his carrots. I believe once that is started it will always have to be done. So thanks again!

| Well now that you ask.... Murfee is 4 and never had is anal glands expressed and never had a problem. About a week ago he started scooting. It was time for his check up and shots so I took him in. The vet expressed them and said that the liquid was thick Anyway we came home and immediately had a bath He stopped scooting for about a day and then started up again so I took him back today. She said the glands were empty but gave him a shot to help with the itching. So far he hasn't scooted any more today. I don't think I would like a groomer to express them. Good luck

| Hmmm...after reading what everyone's written you have me wondering about something that just happened to Sophie. I had her groomed and she looks adorable. I never asked the groomer about expressing her glands. I didn't know anything about that until just now. Anyway, she came home and had a terrible case of diahreah (sp?). I checked old threads and tried everything suggested...pedialite, low fat/low sodium chicken broth, chicken and rice. After three days her diarrhea got so bad there was blood in it so I rushed her to the vet who put her on medication. She's fine now, well almost fine except now she hasn't had a bowel movement for three days. Do you think the groomer could have caused this. The poor little thing's been sick for a week and now I'm wondering if it was because groomer expressed her. Do you think that could be the problem? |
