| New Mommy Needs Your Advice Hello everyone! I just got my baby, Phoebe, this past Saturday so I will brief you on her story: A family friend had bought her as a Christmas gift for his son's girlfriend. This lady could not give her the attention she needed so they gave her up to me. I registered her @ AKC yesterday and have an appointment next Thursday for an exam. She will be 6 months old on the 16th. She was totally unexpected so I jumped on the net and found you folks I have a major concern with her food. When my husband brought her home they had given him 1/2 a bag of Purina Puppy Chow dog food. I went to Petco and got overwhelmed with all the choices so I picked up a bag of Purina Pro Plan for puppies. Now I realize I have made a bad choice. Which food do you think she would switch to most easily? I found a family pet store near by that carries the Canadie and the Wellness which most of you speak highly of. I know it's going to be trial and error but any advice will be appreciated. When I watch her eat it doesn't look like she if half way chewing the food. I put some puppy Caesar on it and she ate it like it was going out of style! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Well, first - WELCOME and CONGRATS!!!!!!!!! And, good for you for trying to find out what is best for your new baby, that's just awesome! I would ditch the Caesar instantly - it's really nasty (which probably why it tastes so great). Canidae and Wellness are really good foods. Are you doing kibble or canned? Just fyi, canned foods are always superior nutritionally to kibble bc they are less processed than kibble - so you could do both, if you like. Some people will free feed kibble - and then give canned twice a day. So, you have a few options there. Wellness makes some wonderful canned foods - some with fish, which is great. Canned gets moisture in their systems as well.

Thanks for the advice. I plan on running out on my lunch hour to purchase the food. I will do canned and kibble! I read somewhere on here that putting a tablespoon of cottage cheese on the kibble entices the babies as well. Do you think she is to young for that?

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Probably not too young - just go slow bc some babies have dairy issues, so just give a little and see what happens. Yogurt is great for them bc of the probiotics - so you could give dollups of that too! (plain)

I got samples of the Canidae, however, the pet store owner suggested I try the Solid Gold Wee Bits. I bought some canned Innova Puppy food & California Natural (salmon & sweet potatoe) that she suggested as well. I hope I don't upset my Phoebe's tummy!

I was just reading again the other day on the dog food analysis site and really like what they said too (as usual) about rotating; I'll link you to their FAQs, then click on "How Often Should I Change Foods?": http://www.dogfoodanalysis.com/faq.html . I think it's good to have a few foods on hand, bc then you can rotate.

I loved the store I went to, I was not expecting what I found. They have EVERYTHING to pamper and spoil my baby rotten!! Plus they had pet decor for my house LOL! There was specialty foods galore and they even bake cookies daily that I got a sample of. She also sold me on some Zuke's mini naturals. I am so excited, I can't wait to go back

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | LOVE the Zukes too - wish it is more widely avialable as well. I find at stores similar to the store you found. Luckily, a new "boutique" just opened closer to me so I'll probably be driving the owner nuts in short order.

BANNED FOR NOT MAILING PRODUCTS PURCHASED | Hello and WARM WELCOMES to YT!!!! Congrats on your new baby!!! I'm Missy and I have 4 babies! Lillie, Baby Bear, Rocky and Kibble (The Brat Pack) All 4 of mine eat Holistic Eagle Pack, all of them love it except Lillie who thinks she is a princess! She is just under 3lbs so I give her soft food once a day and mix her hard kibble in with it. She will eat on the hard kibble, but she don't eat as much of it as she should. So glad to have you abord! I look forward to getting to know you better! |
