| Hypoglecemia I have a puppy that has been diagnosed with Hypoglycemia. If anyone has had a puppy with this, I could really use some education and suggestions. When will Rascal grow out of this? What foods are the best? I still need to put pics up. Hopefully it will be soon!!

Donating YT 30K Club Member | Most importantly make sure he eats every few hours. If he is a picky eater, feed him whatever he will eat. Cali was hypoglycemic until she was 8 months old but she also has a very mild liver shunt. Most grow out of it after a few months old and their weight increases. Keep a close eye out for any signs he is starting to go hypoglycemic, ie acting really tired, weak, stumbling or falling over. Have nutrical on hand and ask your vet if you should give him it regularly. Good luck, hopefully he will do fine from now on

I agree with Patti 100%!!! I also have a hypo baby, and like Patti said frequent feeding are very important! Also dont look past the fact that they burn sugar when they sleep....Diggys hypo seizures happened mainly right when he woke up...so in order to avoid this...I set my alram thru the night to and got up and fed him every 3 hours....so really its every 3 hours 24 hours a day. cheerios are a great snack when they refuse to eat its hard to keepo the appetite going so I was constantly struggling to entice him....I used gerber fruit and veggie puffs, cheerios, rice, and eggs. hope that helps!

| Thank you so much for the info! What are the signs of liver problems? And should I be concerned?

| Thank you Diggy4!! Yes, it does help. It is good to have options when the norm doesn't work. Did your little baby grow out of it?

| Once they are around 6 months old they should have established good eating habits which will stop this condition. Give real food. (I home cook and it's the best and healthiest) Feed anything you know he will gobble up. (lots of good protien foods) Feed what he's able to eat about every 3 hours and give him about a dime size of Nutri-Cal twice a day. Then after a week if he's doing good, feed every 4 hours for another week, Nutri-Cal once a day and then feed three times a day from there on and stop the Nutri-Cal, but put him on a good multi-vitamin, multi-mineral vitamin. |

Staring off into space, inappetance, drooling, small stature, head pressing, seizures, dark urine, UTI, etc. are all symptoms of liver problems which yorkies are 36 times more likely to have than all other breeds combined. If you are even mildly concerned, have a bile acid test done. I always recommend that yorkies have this done...

| They usually grow out of it after about 7-9 months, if they're the tinies. But it could be even up to a year old. I had a lot of trouble with my tinies when I first purchased them, but my breeder was VERY helpful and gave me all kinds of suggestions. I mix their puppy food with a little can and shredded beef and that helps them become interested. Plus, I had to give them nutrical 3 times a day. |
