| What does "Roach Back" look like? Wow, I can honestly say that after reading as many threads as I can on YT, I have done every single thing that is possible to do wrong when buying a puppy. Ugh, why didn't I find this site before I bought my Yorkies??!! Anyway, I read a thread about roach back yorkies, my littlest one kinda looks like he has a bowed up back at times, I can't tell if it's just being a puppy, or not since I didn't even know about this before and never thought about it. I will watch him more closely tomorrow when he's awake and see if it's all the time or not. What does a roach back look like? I tried to look it up on the 'Net but all I have found are discussions about it or articles but no pics... Is it fatal? Is it genetic? I'm sorry I've got such newbie questions, but who better to ask than you guys? Ack, sorry about the smiley, that wasn't the right one. Last edited by jancie; 02-25-2008 at 07:24 PM. |

| There was a recent thread on this topic. Do a search for it, and I think some posted pics.

| Thanks for the link Pup e Love, I used the search tab at the top and I got a message that said "fatal error" which didn't bode well at all since I asked if this was a FATAL condition! LoL! The thread in the link was very helpful, I appreciate you posting it. I will try to get some pics up tomorrow of my little guy.... |

My Lil Man! Donating Member | A roach back is going to be a back with a distinct arch in it or "hump backed" I learned all the body stuff and much much more in my animal science classes I took for fun. Classes for fun you say?? Yea i know lol |

| The back line should be level, with height at shoulder the same as at the rump. To check let the dog stand natural and look at the topline dont hold him/her while doing it. let them stand natural. |

| When I got my second Yorkie, Rosie, she was 1 1/2 yrs., skinny, humped backed, leathered ears, dull and thin hair. I thought for sure she had a roached back. My husband said she looked like a coyote. Turned out it was her former environment. Nine yrs. later her back is fairly straight.

| If you can stack them and their topline is straight, it isn't a roach back. Some puppies will kind of hump up when they are sstanding or you are taking a picture of them but this isn't a true roachback. Also, some puppies that have perfectly straight toplines might have it go off as they grow and then eventually straighten back up. I got scared to death the other day. I thought my show girl's topline was going off. But it wasn't, thank goodness!!!!!! |

| Well, I've been trying to get a good pic all day, but they are either eating, sleeping, pooping or playing! I think their backs are pretty straight so no worries there. I would still like to see a pic of what a roach back looks like though..... |
