Default Hello! and ? about spaying

Hello! I have a six month old pup and have learned a lot from all of you on YT. Thank you! We're taking Cayo to get spayed next week and I'm nervous...any advice? Have you noticed any personality change after? She's perfect how she is! Thanks!

Welcome to YT!

You neednt worry so much! She'll be fine. Daisy was back to normal in a couple of days but it took over 2 weeks to fully heal and resume normal physical activities.

The first couple of days is a bit nerve wracking b/c you need to keep your eye out for excessive licking/poking at the wound, etc. It's usually easier to keep her crated or limited activty for the first few days.

She may be sad and more mellow from the surgery but should be fine in no time (1-2 weeks)

Good Luck!

Welcome to YT!

We all love our babies so much here so I know you must be nervous about her surgery, but she should be just fine.

I highly recommend having a full blood panel done AND a Bile Acid Test before she is spayed. Yorkies are 36 times more likely to have a liver shunt than all other breeds combined, and a Bile Acid Test will let you know if your dog has this or not. And a full blood panel will let you know if there are any other underlying health problems that would make it dangerous to put your baby under. Blood work is often done the day of the spay, but you will need to have the Bile Acid Test done before that day. I just really highly recommend doing both of these so that you can be sure that its safe to put your baby under anaethesia. These tests, along with making sure your vet is familiar with toy breeds, should ensure the surgery will be a success.

My other advice is to be sure and limit her activity the week after her spay. She'll be groggy and sore for a couple days, but will probably be back to her normal self after that. But make sure she isn't too active for few more days. My Lacy was too active too soon (my fault for letting her) and she tore her internal stitches and had to be reopened and restitched...resulting in a longer recovery time. So resting for a week is a must.

Also, you will want to buy an infant onsie (or an e-collar) so that she won't lick and bite at her stitches. I like the onsie because the cone collar is really annoying to most dogs.

So far as personality change - Lacy didn't change one bit.

Smile speaking about being spayed

My Sami, is 5 months on Feb 18th, so should have spayed right away or have her go though their first heat cycle.

You should definitely spay her before she goes into heat. If you spay before a heat, you pretty much eliminate any risk of mammary cancer in the future. If you wait until after one heat, the chances double. Also, dealing with a dog in heat is not fun...there is blood and you have to be so careful so that she won't accidentally get pregnant. Also, a lot of dogs go through false pregnancies which are no fun either. Spaying before the first heat is the best thing to do

We did a lot of research about when to spay, and I agree - definitely before the first heat. Our doctors and everything I read said you double the chance of cancer if they go through a heat cycle. If you're going to spay, do it around 6 months.

And thanks for the onesie advice and the reassuring words! I haven't heard about the bile test - I'm calling the doctor today to inquire about that. Thank you!

I just took Sadie in and the vet wants to spay Sadie at 5 months so she doesn't go into the first heat. She is 4 1/2 months now so she is going in 3 weeks. my little darlin baby. I can't believe it, she is just a little puppy! I know it's for the best but I tear up every time I think of it! I have 3 weeks to look at her and think about this. It is KILLING ME!

I did notice Ellie got a bit more aggressive after spaying. This usually happens only to dogs that were aggressive to begin with (and that is Ellie's case). It seems to be getting better though (a few months later). I wouldn't worry about it if your girl is very sweet now.

Welcome. When I had Lulu spayed she came home groggy the first day. By the day after she was back to her normal spunky self. No worries. I just would stress getting the pre-spay bloodwork to make sure she is fine for the procedure. While she is under have the vet remove any double's on the teeth. Usually they do it for free since they are under already. You can also have her microchipping done at that time to spare her any discomfort (that is if you choose to have her chipped). Another good thing is for them to cut back her nails if they are a bit long. If she is anything like the rest of the babies on here she probably hates having her nails cut.

Good luck and we will keep you both in our puppy prayers.

Brooke I just took Zoey for her pre-op and she is 5 1/2 months. The vet recommended waiting a bit more because he wants to see how her teeth shape up in another month or two at least. I asked about her heat and wanting to beat the first one and he said we will definitely beat the first heat but she still has no decended adult teeth so he wants to wait some more. Think about that in deciding if you want to hold off on your spay. He said in his experience he hasn't come across a yorkie that had her heat before 7 months and he also said it's best to let them get a bit more growth done before doing it.

Regarding the onesie, do you actually close up the buttons? If so, how can she pee? Can anyone enlighten me please?

I wish I had found YT sooner! I had no idea about acid bile testing, or that the heat cycle was a bad thing!

Zoe had her first heat at age 10.5 months. She is 3#.

I wish I had known that we should have spayed her BEFORE that. I had always 'thought' it was best to have females go through one heat cycle. Dang it all!

I LOVE YT!

Oh, the onesie idea is wonderful!
