| Panting during a thunderstorm My yorkie is under my desk as I type this, panting like crazy. There is a thunderstorm that has passed for the most part, but still rumbles every now and then. She has never done this before...anyone else have this happen, and how do you comfort them? And why do they pant? I've tried holding her and soothing her, but she wants to be on the floor under the desk by my feet. The puppy meanwhile is running around the room playing, she could care less! |

| Welcome to yt. Murfee is terrified of thunderstorms. He always hides someplace...under the bed, in the closet, in the bathroom. I try to hold him or cuddle him but that's not what he wants....and he shakes too.

| They say the one thing you don't want to do when it's stomring is baby them, or tell them it's okay..My shih tzu is almost 10 and when it storms she is petrified, I just tell her to go lay down..if they have a crate or somewhere they feel safe that's where they need to be..I know it's hard not to baby them, but, mine actually gets worse when I do hold her.. You can get some pills from your Dr to give them when it's storming..I had some of those, but, I'm out.. |

| i KNOW you shouldn't baby them when they are scared but thunderstorms are the only time i do.. i will either put her in her crate (which usually makes her happy) or i'll wrap her tight in a blanket and hold her and she usually calms down |

| Try this for storm phobias! Our Shi Tzu, Reggie, has really severe storm phobias. I've read a ton on it, we've tried medication, crating, behavior modification, etc. Wanna know the one thing that I discovered that has worked as well or better than anything?? Based on treatments for autistic children, it's a sort of pressure wrap for dogs. There are a couple of different types - some based on straight pressure and some that include a material to discharge any static that dogs often feel during a storm. The pressure helps sooth the over-stimulated nerve endings during the "attack". These coats/wraps are a little pricey, but I read a lot on the premise of their success. So what I did to try it out cheaply was buy a couple little premie t-shirts (the snap kind which is easier to put on when he's already phobic). I put them both on and they fit very very tightly. The pressure that they give him seems to calm him almost immediately. He's obviously not "fine", but he is much less close to going into a full-fledged seizure from the fear alone. It got to the point that Reggie would look forward to my getting his t-shirts when it started to storm. (And they say that about the wraps - that animals will practically ask for them when the storm starts.) I told my groomer about this and she said that she had another lady with a yorkie that just used a tight tube sock over the trunk to do the same thing. Funny, we often dress our pets but don't realize that there are therapeutic uses for that clothing!

| I've never heard that one before...I know it's my shih tzu that is terrified of storms, and I'm also afraid she's going to have a heart attack one of these times...her legs will even keep shaking when she's laying there.. |

| hha is so right. Quote:
I put a light on, the exaust fan on, and a radio or t.v. on in another room to muffle the storm sounds. It's helped a great deal. | |

| Although my Pippa isnt frightened of thunderstorms...when she is scared of something she too pants and sometimes shakes aswell. I hold her tight and talk to her and she is fine in no time!

| I read that dogs pant and sometimes throw up when they are scared. Sadie did both when we picked her up from the breeder. We had a 3 hour drive and she must have been terrified to go home with strangers! She settled in after about 24-48 hours... but I felt horrible for her at first!

| I have two that are terribly scared of thunderstorms. One alway goes and hides under a chair and my 12 year old girl has to be held. Some of the other start panting but do not have panic attacks like these two do. |
