Default My new yorkie will not eat anything...HELP

I got an older yorkie last week from a friend who found her at a breeding house. Sydney has only eaten twice since I've gotten her home. I have tried 3 different dog foods(two dry and 1 soft kibble) and I'm at a loss. She only lays around and most of the time "hides out" from us. She seems like she may have been beaten at one time as she cowers when we reach for her.
Was told she could be pregnant and I'm not sure what to do. Anyone have any ideas? Never had a pregnant dog before so don't know if maybe this is just normal if she is (vet didn't say anything about finding any signs of it though). Any help would be appreciated cause I want to love her to death but she just stays away from everyone.

Welcome to YT. I would suggest you give her some time to acclimate herself to the household and then she will warm up. If she came from horrible conditions then she probably doesn't know much about interaction with people.

What makes you think she might be pregnant? I would leave the food down and maybe in the interim until she gets settled maybe grill a piece of chicken (no seasoning) and feed her that so you know she has something in her tummy.

Post a picture of your new girl. We love pictures here.

Again love and patience is all you can do for now.

My friend was told by the breeder she might be... don't know though.

Thanks for the advice!! Will have to get some chicken for her!

I suggest getting a good quality canned food such as Nature's Variety, Innova, Wellness, Canidae, California Natural, or Merrick. You can usually find these at pet stores or feed stores. If you can't find any of those, petsmart carries Blue Buffalo and Royal Canin that are pretty good and Petco carries Solid Gold. She'll most likely eat the canned food over the dry.

I also suggest getting her to a vet as soon as you are able to for a good checkup.

Forget the dog food. You get some nice steak, chicken or anything else you can, and feed that little girl before she dies. She needs to start eating ASAP. You can start by giving her medium rare steak. Also get her a tube of Nutri-Cal and give her some two to three times a day. Please, just make her feel safe and loved.

Only eaten twice in a week?!?!

Please get some 'human" food (or a high quality dog food) and MAKE her eat.

I would probably get chicken and cut the fat off (my favorite is the white meat). Then I would boil it with no seasonings. Then add something to it (brown rice, wheat pasta....anything) and put some veggies in it and about a teaspoon of olive or canola oil and make her eat.

I'm sure steak would be fine too or canned food but she has to have something.

Welcome to YT!! I would be taking her to the vet to be checked over -- find out if she is pregnant. Do you know if she is up-to-date on shots?

How did the chicken work?

She may very likely take some time to adjust to her new environment, and if she has been abused, it could take even longer.

Default Suggestions

I have 3 suggestions for you. These 3 have never failed me yet.

1. Boiled chicken breast

2. Boiled hambugar

3. And although this isn't a "QUALITY" canned food - Puppy Ceasers. (I ALWAYS keep some on hand for a non eating emergency. Its way better to have SOMETHING in them even if its not QUALITY, than nothing at all.

Good luck !!!! Please keep us posted !!!

Sydney has finally started eating canned food!! I took her to vet today. She has bad- I mean BAD- teeth. Having to get front ones pulled next week. Her gums have receded and they are all loose. Maybe why she wouldn't eat the dry? I appreciate all the advice ya'll have given me. I just know she's going to fine now. She's such a sweetheart.
