Mucous covered stools? I just got a new puppy yesterday Her name is Ava, she is a 3 month old Yorkie. Her stools were solid earlier today but she wasn't eating too well, so I put a teeny tiny bit of wet Iams in with her dry food. She ate it well but then had mucous covered stools. I have read that its a sign of a disease (i forget the name) but does it definitely mean that she is sick?? TIA

not necessarily........... toby had solid poop,,..... and then ten minuits later JUST MUCOUS ...... but now hes fine, it doesnt necessarily mean that it is a disease , but the lack of eating is concerning......... i think the disease is coccidiosis (at least thats what someone told me it was, but it turned out hes fine after all)..... here this is what i found: Clinical Signs Clinical signs of coccidiosis usually are present or shortly following stress such as weather changes; weaning; overcrowding; long automobile or plane rides; relocation to a new home and new owners; and/or unsanitary conditions. Symptoms or signs of coccidiosis will depend on the state of the disease at the time of observation. In general, coccidiosis affects the intestinal tract and symptoms are associated with it. In mild cases, only a watery diarrhea may be present, and if blood is present in the feces, it is only in small amounts. Severely affected animals may have a thin, watery feces with considerable amounts of intestinal mucosa and blood. Straining usually is evident, rapid dehydration, weight loss and anorexia (off feed) also may be clinically visible. One of the most prevalent canine coccidia is S. tenella and during autopsies of dead animals appears as microscopic muscle cysts in the host animal. Oocysts in the feces of dogs are also microscopic in size and can only be positively identified through lab tests or direct observation under a microscope.I hope youre baby feels better its so sad to get a sick puppy, i know .......i was freaking out when i found out toby had kennel cough (turns out he has such a mild case they didnt perscribe anything)... and then the diareah mucous thing was scary...... I would double check with teh vet just to make sure (im sure you have to get a health check anyways????? ) maybe take a fecal sample with you... keep us posted on how little ava is doing (such a sweet name by the way, did you choose it or did she come with that name?)

Thanks for the reply I just picked her up on Sunday, so I am pretty sure thats why she wasnt eating much. The breeder said they usually fed her with a little bit of wet mixed with the dry, so maybe that's what she is used to? I would rather her be on dry only, so we'll see how that goes..lol. She isnt acting sick at all, she is a very spunky puppy I'll see how it is today I guess. She had her vet check yesterday before the mucousy thing happened though. I will keep an eye on her. She was a healthy 2 lbs 7 oz yesterday, so I don't think she is losing any weight either. About her name- I dunno, I just liked it..lol I thought it was a princess name lol And also, me, my husband and our son all have "A" names, so I figured she should too

Then very fact that you said that Ava isn't acting as though she is sick is so good! She's adapting to a lot and I think very few of us have NO problems whatsoever at first. You'll soon know if she's sick, although a young pup will sleep a lot so that isn't a worry! I think it's a sweet name too!

As you get to know ava, you will get better at reading if she is sick or not...... i know when i first got toby, everything freaked me out......and ava is a princess name, thats why i liked it..lol....... if i gave toby (male) and princess name my fiance would kill me! Just keep an eye on her and see how she does..... leaving littermates and mom can be stressful to them.......
