| Puppy food help!!! Hi All, I have been reading this website for a few months, ever since I got Pixie about 2 months ago. She is about 5 months now and a really funny yorkie. Your posts have been so helpful. She is my first yorkie; I had a Staffordshire terrier in the past, so needless to say much different experience. She is doing really well on crate training, holds it through-out the night, during the day (with a lunch break), and has not had an accident in the house in a few weeks. She gives me the saddest look when she needs to go outside. Also, she wakes me up every morning 1 minute before my alarm clock goes off, how funny. The problem I have - ever since I got her she has had runny to bloody stool. The breeder gave me a mix of Bil Jac Puppy and Royal Canine to feed her but that caused really bloody stool and a trip to the vet (who gave her the all clear). After a few experiments, I took her off the Bil Jac and fed her Royal Canine 33 only – miraculously NO more bloody stool but still rather soft to runny. The only time her stool has been somewhat firm is when I fed her Royal Canine mixed with Pedigree Lamb/Rice canned. I want to keep her on a good dry kibble, since I know its better. I have read your posts and I’m torn between Avoderm, Nutro Natural, Chicken Soup, or Canidea. I already have two bags of uneaten dog food and really don’t want to keep adding to the storage room. Any suggestions before I go out shopping again? Or just keep buying food to find something that works. She is not a picky eater, she will eat just about anything and she is healthy otherwise. BTW, my pit bull ate Ol’roy and with no problems (I didn’t know any better at the time) so this food thing is foreign to me. Sorry So Gross, but I feel so bad for my snoodles. I know there are similiar posts but after reading I was still a little lost. Thanks In Advance Candace in Cleveland |

| I'm sorry you're having trouble. Royal Canin does cause that in some Yorkies. I don't recommend it. Pedigree is a terrible food, so if you want to give canned I would look for a different one. Probably Evangers and Merrick are the best. Contrary to popular opinion, canned food is absolutely fine to give all the time. Whatever you feed it is important to brush your dog's teeth. Some good kibbles are Canidae, Innova, Wellness, Chicken Soup... It is really whatever works for your dog. You will just have to keep experimenting. Once you are sure you're done with a bag of food you could donate it to an animal shelter instead of just throwing it away. If you are willing to homecook, one of the members here got a recipe from a dog nutritionist for IBD/Colitis. It might work for you. It is white fish (tilapia...), mashed potatoes and green beans. You will have to supplement if you do this for more than a few days. Maybe try PMing her... Her user name is Wylie'sMom.

| I home cook, which is the best way to keep your pet healthy, but "IF", and I do mean a major BIG "IF", I was not physically able to cook for my dogs, I'd put them on Innova. http://www.naturapet.com/ This dog food IS the best dog food on the market. It cannot be beat by any other brand of dog food. |

| I feed raw, but I believe homecooking is the second best way to go. After that, I suggest a premium grain-free canned food such as Innova Evo and Nature's Variety Instinct (comes in several protein sources) - if you want to keep grains, there is regular Innova, Nature's Variety Prairie, California Natural, Merrick, Wellness, and Canidae. I recommend a quality canned food over kibble - it is less processed and contains important moisture.

| My puppy had been fed Purina by his breeder, so of course I wanted to change that! He's only been with us for a day, but so far he LOVES his Merrick Puppy Plate. I was shocked! We've also been giving him Canidae as a treat and he loves that too! Hope you figure out what works best for your baby!

I do want to say though that while the Innova kibble is good, I NEVER could recommend the Innova canned now. It is way too high in fat and I think it may have given Ellie pancreatitis (maybe the turkey in it). So, just a warning.

| UPDATE: Thanks for all your advice about food. I decided to switch Pixie to Chicken Soup for The Pet Lovers Soul from Royal Canine. I really didn’t do it gradual, kind of 50/50 mix. I noticed the difference immediately. Now she is 100% on Chicken Soup and I’m so happy with the food. At first, she didn’t like it – I had to put a little parmesan cheese in her food. But now she is head first into her dog bowl. Now she has small, not-stinky, firm poop, – No more runny-bloody stool! Also, another thing I have noticed – she doesn’t look so bloated/fat anymore. I am so happy with Chicken Soup and it was the lowest price food that I have tried (Bil-jac, Royal Canine, and Nutro) Thanks for all your suggestions! She will be 6-months Friday. She will be neutered on Tuesday and I am assuming getting some teeth pulled. Her teeth her terrible, double teeth all over (terrible breath of course). |
