| How Can I Change Roxy's Diet?? Advice? Ever since Roxy was a puppy she has been getting Eukanuba... I have tried to change her, and the only thing that DIDNT make her sick was changing her from puppy to adult. I have tried changing her food because I know the terrible things that are in the food that I give her... But as we all know, Yorkies have sensitive stomachs... Everytime I change her food she throws up & gets bad diarrhea. I dont know what to do... I want to change her to a better Dog Food, something with no "By Product" in it... But without the Eukanuba, it seems she gets really poopy and vomity, and I know lots of Yorkie's shorten their lives from Chronic Diarrhea and Chronic Vomiting... Please help?

| There has got to be a way. Did you try changing gradually or all at once? What foods have you tried? The only way I know how to get around this is to homecook.

| I have tried giving her homecooking, which she did well on at first, but once I took away her Eukanuba, a day later she had Diarrhea... Then I tried changing her from Eukanuba to Royal Canin in a week, I gave her a little bit more every time... Diarrhea... I gave her Blue Buffalo with Eukanuba, she got Diarrhea... No matter what I do, as soon as the Eukanuba isn't in her diet or added with something, she gets Diarrhea...

If you want to homecook you could try the recipe Wylie'sMom got from an animal nutritionist for IBD/colitis. It is white fish (tilapia...), mashed potatoes and green beans.

| Actually, I did try plain yogurt, I used to freeze it for her, to make ice cream for her, and she had Diarrhea for a week! So she didnt get any yogurt after that... Then I made her homemade stuff with ground up chicken and chicken baby food, also she had diarrhea... Its like no matter what if she doesnt get the Eukanuba... my baby gets diarrhea. My other dogs get Innova, and I tried that on her too, but she got really bad diarrhea for a few days and even through up... I'm not sure if theres something in Eukanuba, theres no ingredients that point me in that direction that make me say thats what it would be used for.

| Beet pulp is the closest thing I can find that Euk has in that for the stomach: Beet Pulp is the vegetable matter that remains after sugar is extracted from sliced grey sugar beets. It is an excellent source of soluble fiber and helps to maintain a healthy digestive tract and promote normal stools. But RC has it too, I believe. I would try the homemade diet posted above just to see. Euk isn't the most horrible food ever but they are Iams which does all the animal testing garbage.

| Yeah, I hate Iams, and I didnt like that when I got her she was already on Eukanuba, so I just thought Id change it, but easier said than done obviously. Plus, I read too much stuff that said that too many times "Meat By Product" is actually euthanized animals... AND I DONT WANT TO GIVE HER EUTHANIZED ANIMALS!!! LOL needless to say. So, thats why I want to change so bad.

I didn't see "meat by product" as an ingredients. I agree. That is bad. I saw chicken by-product. Of course it may not be good but atleast it's chicken and not a nameless creature.

| I dont like feeding her chicken feet or beaks either... oh, and there theres like Corn Meal, which is bad too... and a few other things I saw that I didnt like that name of and made me uncomfortable... I'm just confused... I never want to have to feel like it was my fault if something happened to Roxy, and I want to feel like I did everything I could to make sure she was healthy.

YT 2000 Club Member | How old is your Roxy? Have you tried canned food or just kibble? I switched my little guy, Jeter, over to Chicken Soup for The Puppy Lovers Soul after he came home to live with us. I did it very gradually over a week, slowly increasing the new food. He did get sick about 5weeks ago with Coccidia that was stress related and he lost some weight so now we are adding canned Merrick Puppy Plate to his food too, just to help him catch back up to the weight lost during 2 weeks of sickness. I did not think it was going to be such a challenge to gain back 5 1/2 ounces that he lost. He is a tiny little guy and was doing good gaining weight till he got Coccidia! Maybe you could check out the Yorkie Health and Diet thread and see a sticky that they have their that list Super Premium food and you can send for free samples and possibly find her a food that will help her out and be better for her! Good luck!

Rocky is 4 years old and Daisy is 3 years old. After the age of 1 year they both went on Natural Balance Ultra Premium dry kibble (No stomach issues). Little over a year ago I introduced them to Natures Variety Raw Beef Medallion (No rejection, loves them). I would keep the dry Natural Balance kibble out all day and feed them both 1 beef medallion each day. Couple of weeks ago I thought it would be a good idea to switch Rocky & Daisy off Natural Balance dry kibble and change them over to Natures Variety Instinct kibble, this way they would be on the same brand and totally on a Grain Free diet. The switch was very gradual, and right away Rocky got slimy diarrhea and of course throwing up. I weaned back on the new kibble and Rocky still had the same symptoms and then I saw blood in his poop. Someone here gave some great advice on Bene-Bac gel, and that helped greatly. Rocky had 3 days of that bloody, slimy, diarrhea so of course he is back on the Natural Balance Kibble with 1 Natures Variety Raw medallion a day. Daisy never had a problem at all with the switch, but I've decided to keep them both on the same thing. The over all goal was to switch to one brand and be grain free. Natural Balance has 3 other dry formulas that are grain free, and I'll probably try a switch in a couple months. It's so hard for me to see my little guy when he is sick like that. He is very active and when he went through this his symptoms were shivering, always sleeping, throwing up 8 times a day, loose slimy bloody stool, drinking lots of water then throwing some of it up. Your doing a great job in trying to switch. Just make sure you keep the receipt of the new dog food. Most stores are very nice and will allow you to bring it back, if your dog is having a bad reaction. Maybe sometime in the future you could try Nature Variety Raw Beef Medallions. Rocky & Daisy both went to this without any bad reactions. http://www.naturesvariety.com/ The petstore I go to for this allowed me to take a sample home to try it first. They both gobbled it up and acted if it was more of a treat then a meal. Best of luck. Last edited by girltime; 01-18-2008 at 06:30 AM. | |

That being said I don't feed by-products or chemicals at all. We do homecooked.

| Ok here are my when Gizmo was a pup I had the HARDEST time finding him a food that did not make his stool runny... so I tried him on everything Innova, Merricks, Wellness, Etc... but I found that he needed a very Simple food , made with very little ingredients so his little tummy could process... so after research and more research i put him on California Natural Chicken & Rice, they also have Lamb & Rice which is good too... this food is made for dogs/ pups with sensitve tummies... it works wonders on coats, and energy levels... check it out here, http://www.naturapet.com/brands/california-natural.asp it is also hypo allergenic for kiddos with food allergies.. another one is Natural Balance Duck & Potatoe.. that works too... Right now I have him on Life's Abundance which is sold by one of our own Linda(fufufashions) and let me tell you he gobbled it up.... she can send you a sample if you like too...http://www.fufufashions.com/HealthyP..._Dog_Food.html also if you DO decide to TRY California Natural and don't have a store near you I would be more than happy to send you a sample of the food if you like... just let me know.. and good luck! OHHH I forgot to mention California Natural is also ranked on the dogfoodanaylsis website as 4 stars so thats good too.... |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Crystal has already given such great advice - as have others. I'm really mystified by all the trouble you're having, really odd. Have you tried riding out the diarrhea (tough, I know) for a bit more of an extended time? Do you want to do homecooking or kibble long-term? I'd suggest a couple things: *Since the bene-bac is working, you could use it daily (but in a decreased dosage) for a 2-3 week period during a transition *2nd, you could add mashed white potatoes to each kibble meal (if you go the kibble route); carbs/potatoes can be rather soothing to tummies - so they could help during the transition. They'll also help absorb nauseous juices on the front end. You might also think about adding digestive enzymes - but maybe start w/ the other stuff first? Keep me posted - bc this is rather a unique little furbutt!
