| Food: Dry? Canned? Help... I have a 3yo yorkie male - not too active (12#), one 3yo bichon (active-20#) and a small poodle/bichon mix (13#) very active around 6 yo. HELP. WHAT DO I FEED THEM? The vet's rec is not good. The present food I found thru the analysis site can cause bloat and has questionable ingred. I was considering artemis fresh mix for small breed and weight management, possibly the canidae platinum, darwins or blue. Is canned better? Help. I am concerned with protein levels since most of the foods listed on the analysis pertain to boxers or large breeds. I am not a new owner - just educated now that I have found the analysis site. Please help. Thanks. so much.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Artemis, Canidae etc. are very good foods, in terms of kibble. Canned is better nutritionally (bc it's less processed, less denatured) and it has more moisture, which is always good. Personally, I like higher protein diets if it works for the dog - bc it is more natural for their systems. That said, high protein kibbles can cause increased thirst - so if you go that route, I'd add in canned for more moisture. If you want standard protein - the brands you mentioned are good; you could do a combo of canned and kibble - they'd probably love that. Another brand I LOVE is Natures Variety (they have canned, kibble (grain free Instinct line), freeze dried raw, and raw): www.naturesvariety.com. Good luck!

| I like homecooked but am not recommending it because some days it gets very old calculating and weighing out everything (which you can get around if you aren't as picky as me). I prefer canned over kibble by far. It is much less processed and has good amounts of moisture. I prefer to stay lower protein with Yorkies (doesn't mean it's right) because I have found no long term studies by a vet school that show high protein doesn't hurt their kidneys. I don't think it does but I'm not willing to take that chance until I see proof and maybe even never. This is something you will have to find your place in. Some good canned foods are Evangers and Evangers and Evangers It is made here and they get most of their ingredients in the US. If you want to go with kibble Innova is fine along with Canidae (not my favorite but certainly a good food), Natural Balance (they had recalls though) and Wellness.

| i wish I could try the artemis fresh mix small breed food on these kids. But I really would like to have something I could go to a store and purchase. I went back to the site of the food I am feeding them and found they state there is none of the Ethoxyquin in there food any longer. As for bloat caused by the dry - I don't know. Most of the canned food listed in the analysis has NO reviews. I guess a mixture of the two. Presently I feed the chunker 1/4 c of castor/pollus weight management with 1/2tsp of halo spot stew for dogs twice a day. The other two get 1/3 cup of C/P Organix with 1 tbls of halo spot stew for dogs @ 2x a day. Maybe decrease the dry and increase the stew? See? How do you know what they are truly getting as far as nutrition? And calorie needs per behavior. Seems good for the bichon but the yorkie I feel is lacking somewhere.

| What I would probably do in your case (if I could afford the canned) is to pick a canned food that fits each dog (it might be the same for all) and feed each dog the minimal amount suggested on the can for their weight. That way you know they are getting enough vitamins. I would probably split that amount of canned up into two or three feedings a day. Then you could either add a meal of dry or free feed dry if they won't overeat.

| I have had a lot of success with Canidae Holistic Blend, Canidae Lamb and Rice, Chicken Soup and Solid Gold. The only canned foods I like is Pedigree Lamb and Rice and Pedigree Traditional Ground Chicken and Rice. I have to buy these at Petsmart and mix them with the dry food. |

| I use Dick Van Patten's Duck and Potato and Nature's Variety New Zealand Venison. My one malt is allergic to lamb so we steer clear of lamb. I also treat with Van Patten's 'rolls' which can be used as a staple of as a treat. http://www.waggintails.com/store/Dis...Rolls+for+Dogs
