I read that white chocolate is okay for dogs. Has anyone heard anything about this?

From what I read, it doesn't hurt them the way chocolate does, because the ingredient that is harmful in the chocolate isn't in white chocolate. I think it was either the cocoa bean or the caffeine. I'll try and find the article..

That kinda makes sense since I've also read that it's the DARK chocolate that extremely dangerous. Milk chocolate isn't great for them, but it would hurt them as badly as the darker kind.

I might be mistaken, but I think its the cocoa in the chocolate thats dangerous. BUT that doesn't mean go feeding your dogs white and milk chocolate! haha

Really there is not much danger when talking about toxicity but there is concern of pancreatitis. I think there are better things to feed. How about carob?

The minimum toxic level of theobromine is 100-200mg/kg with 250-500mg/kg being the level at which half of the dogs would die as a result of consuming chocolate. So what does that mean as far as how much chocolate is toxic? The level of theobromine varies depending on the type of chocolate. The levels of theobromine are listed below:

Milk chocolate 60 mg/oz

Baking chocolate 450 mg/oz

Semi-sweet chocolate 260 mg/oz

Hot chocolate 12 mg/oz

White chocolate 1 mg/oz

I've heard that white chocolate isn't "real" chocolate.. not sure though.

There is some white chocolate flavoured candy, like those inexpensive white rabbits at Easter, but real white chocolate is definitely chocolate as it has cocoa in it.

I was thinking about the carob, but I know Mr. Biggs doesn't really care for it. I was looking into using it as icing for treats. I'm only going to be using a small amount of the white chocolate, so it shouldn't affect his pancreas. I'm going to do some more reading up on it. Thanks for all the info!

There is a yogurt coating that some of the doggie bakeries around here are using as icing on the cookies - maybe you try that.

I didn't even think of that! I just looked it up and I found a few different ideas. I'm going to get the ingredients tomorrow and give it a try.

I agree with Mr. Shelby's Mom. Avoid the very appearance of evil.....no chocolate of any kind, no grapes, no raisins, no onions.....you know the drill.
