| The Dreaded Kennel Cough Wee Sebo (8 mnths old) has contracted the dreaded Kennel Cough, possibly from a grooming parlour. Our Vet prescribed 1 week on antibiotics, and a herbal rememdy to supplement the antibiotics. 1 week from the first signs of the disease, and 4 days into the course of meds., the wee man seems to have shown no improvement, and if anything, seeem to be slightly worse! Has anyone has the experience of Kennel Cough with their dogs, and if so, how long did it last, did it get worse before it got better and what were the most common symptoms! Thanks for your time! | I'm sorry this hasn't been answered. I have zero experience with kennel cough (thankfully).

| The only time I dealt with kennel cough was when I adopted my cat from the SPCA, so I can't be of any help there. Most likely if that antibiotic doesn't work, your vet will prescribe a new one. I'm surprised the Bortadella wasn't part of your puppy vaccinations.

Donating YT 30K Club Member | When I got Cali she had it and gave it to my pom who was 8 years old. They both had it for 3 months. They were on 3 cycles of antibiotics but it just had to run it's course. Their coughs were worse at night and first thing in the morning. I did steam up the small bathroom and sat in there with them. Cali was a sick puppy and Maya had health issues so I think that's why it took longer to clear up but it can last several weeks or longer. Hope your baby gets well soon.

| Layla had it for over a month.. it's like a cold.. it has to run its course.. the antibiotics are just to keep it from developing into pneumonia.. what i found made a world of difference for layla was to put a humidifier by her crate at night.. that really helped with the nighttime coughing! |

| pheobe had kennel cough from the breeder i got her from. the breeder denied it and said she must have picked it up on the plane but kennel cough is actually in the body for a long time ( cant remember exact #) before the signs come out. so it had to have been from her breeding facility. im not one for the vet's help at all, since ive only had horrible experiences with them. i did my own research. and found out that the vets can do nothing, for kennel cough so they provide antibiodics, which has nothing to do with the kennel cough virus. i searched and searched and read and read and even talked to a few experienced yorkie breeders. and made up my own remedy. and from my experience of what i did, i stand by it 100%. usually a dog will have the cough anywhere from 5 days to 2 weeks. pheobe was better by the end of her third day after i noticed she was sick. all i did was keep her warm, only short short trips out side to go potty, and never without her coat on. i gave her a lick of honey whenever she seemed to have a little coughing fit. and its calmed it almost immediatly. in the morning, at about 1 pm and at night i gave her warm honey water mixed with 250 miligrams of vitamin C. she would usually have the water gone within an hour or so. i beleive the vitamin C really does the trick since it boosts the immune system. im not saying take my word for it but i betcha he'll be betetr in no time!

| I will start this out saying I am not a vet but I just got an 11 week old yorkie baby and she was having some coughing problems last week. "Kennel Cough" is really a generalization for what could be a number of upper respiratory infections or viruses and just like humans get the flu shot for a specific strand of the flu, dogs get shots for specific strands of viruses. A vet can not ask your dog exactly where the problem is and how it feels in their throat so they generalize and will prescribe antibiotics. If the puppy has a virus, just like in humans antibiotics will not slow down the virus it needs to run its course. A puppy will have a weakened immune system from fighting the virus and the antibiotics can help stop any other major respiratory problems from happening. With all of this said, just like a young child there are a few things that can help ease these coughs. A humidifier in the room with the puppy will help loosen the cough. I have heard from other sources as well as posted above that honey helps ease the cough. I have given my puppy a little bit of robitussin CF when hers got bad, it was approximately 1/8-1/10 of a teaspoon, I would not do this without consulting your veterinarian but it did help her sleep. It is not uncommon for your puppy to cough at night when trying to go to bed or when they wake up, think about when you have a cough and what happens to your throat at night. Last, I would not worry yet about the cough subsiding, this can take time depending on exactly what is causing the cough. As long as there aren't other infections in the body it should be ok. With all of that said! I still get upset when Bella is coughing only now I tell her to cough it up and get it out! |

| Thanks for the replies. It's been 2 and a half weeks with the disease, 1 week of antibiotics didn't seem to help, although the vet told me it stopped the kennel cough becoming something more serious. He also a shot of anti inflammatory and a cough suppressant, just to give him a wee break from the coughing and to settle him down at night time! He visits the vet for the fourth time this Thursday, and I'm pleased to say that he really is on the mend, and how quickly it has happened, over the last 3 days! Just the occassional grunt now, amd the bubbling/whining from his chest area has gone away, so it looks like good news! Thanks for your concern! Bob and Sebo! |
