| His paw licking is making me INSANE I'm new here, and my Yorkie, Walter, is turning 6 later this month. I love him to bits, but the licking is out of control. He's ALWAYS been a big fan of licking...his paws, mostly; but he'll also lick everything else (me, the furniture, the carpet, etc.) He's been to the vet, who said he's healthy and fine, except that his paws are red and irritated from constantly being wet; short of putting an e-collar on him, is there anything I can do? I tried the bitter stuff, but he didn't care. It's more a habit than anything else. Any assistance is very appreciated! |

I can offer you some information on what can happen when they DO lick like that..... lick granulomas are quite common in dogs who are incessantly licking (initially usually due to behavioral problems, skin irritation or even a neurological disorder affecting the nerves... then later can become sheer habit or a source of "comfort" when nervous or even bored) and can be pretty nasty things to "cure"... (in fact, none of the known treatments have been successful in all cases... so it's often a tough road of "trial and error") Generally, large breed male dogs are the most common to encounter lick granuloma problems, but it can occur in any breed. Here is an informative web page you can look over... http://www.sniksnak.com/doghealth/lick-gran.html

| Thanks to both of you. It hasn't "progressed" to granuloma, and he takes Benadryl children's chewables twice a day. The vet thinks that it's a nervous thing - he IS a nervous thing! Next time we see the vet, I'll ask about other options. I looked at e-collars, but (1) he would hate me; (2) the smallest was too big, and (3) I am very tired of revenge urine! |

| Sorry, don't know how to edit. Tried to correct a misspelling and my posting disappeared. Anyway, as I said---My Pommie, who died about 1.5 yrs. ago, had an allergy to grass. Her paws would become red, slightly swollen, and she would lick constantly. I just made sure that she didn't piddle on grass---rather used the decorative rocks. Benadryl works and so does an anti-itch spray if it an allergy. Good luck. Joanne |

| I have a OCD one too ~ TJ - in the middle of the night he lies in bed and licks his paw and bites his nails, then he wakes me up to go pee. It drives me INSANE! His paws are soaking wet! I don't know if Benedryl every day is really good either though |

The vet said that Benadryl was a good option for him, but I don't think it's working as well anymore. I need to take His Highness to the vet for a dental cleaning, maybe while he's under anesthetic they can whisper, "Licking is icky" in his ear a few times! | |

| My Mini Schnauzer constantly chewed her paws. They actually turned a "rust" color from all the chewing. My vet recommended fast actin' Tinactin for Athletes foot. The human kind. It WORKED. I guess she had a fungus? I just sprayed it on her paws twice a day. She didn't like it, and licked them after, but I guess enough got on them to help. It did not seem to hurt her to lick it off. Good luck!!!
