What to feed a new pup? I have seen so many recommendations about what to feed Yorkie pups here and elsewhere! I have read to grind dry puppy food for healthy teeth, treat with sweet stuff like sugared cereal or fruit, and I have read that you should add some not-too-rich wet food to dry food. I use a variety of Science Diet, Purina ONE or Eucanuba (SP?) right now, depending on the ever-changing tastes of my current pets. Any suggestions so I can go shopping for less than 10 items before I bring a Yorkie pup home? BTW, this site is great! It looks like there are a lot of long-time contributors who really care about the breed and other people's Yorkies too! Thanks, Lori Last edited by lucynfred; 01-02-2005 at 03:48 PM.

i feed toby eukanuba petit for puppies, it is a dry food but it has little kibbles so it is easier for the small pup to handle... once in a while if i feel he has been extra good i will mix a little babyfood and water with his food so the babyfood coats the kibble..... i would start off first with whatever the breeder gave the pup, and i would introduce any other brand slowly.... but i find that eukanuba is really working out well...

Eukie might work. Science diet 'small' bites are still pretty big. ... maybe I will go with Eukaneuba. The meat baby food wouldn't be too "rich" either. A better choice than other wet food - I've always had bad results w/that stuff. thanks.

Hi! I'm new here. I just picked up my little Bowzer a couple of days ago. My breeder had been feeding him the Eukanuba Petit as well, so that's what I'm sticking with. I understand that its best to continue feeding a pup whatever the breeder has been feeding it, or you may wind up with some tummy troubles. We had that happen with a Sheltie that we had. I switched her food too quickly and she ended up with blood in her stool...

Bowzer is so cute! How old is he? I think I'm gonna slowly switch over to Eukanuba if that's not what the breeder is using. Welcome! BTW, who is your breeder? I am in Alabama looking for a Southeast breeder. -Lori

Bowzer is 9 weeks old. My breeder is a little lady from Cape Coral, FL. Unfortunately, she told me that the litter Bowzer came from would probably be her last. She's 76 years old and she said she just couldn't handle the work anymore. It seems really hard to find a decent breeder these days. Have you checked for one through the AKC website?

Nadine529, Yes, and I have e-mails pending. I left two messages today and have also talked to TONS of people on phone who want to let babies go at 6 weeks, mom and dad not on site, etc. etc. I decided not to find a pup from the paper after about a week or two, started looking online after that, and am getting responses from some breeders I've contacted, but I'm VERY picky -- want a boy, wanna see kennel, etc. etc. Talked to an old lady today too -- aren't they the sweetest! (And she despised pet shops). She had just sold her last male that was going to be within the standard.

She was just the sweetest thing. She too despised the pet shops & commercial breeders. Frankly, I really don't know why/how pet shops are still in business. They're just so wrong & they mark the dogs up so much, that you're getting a dog of less quality who was most likely mistreated for double the price or more!!!! It doesn't make any sense! Good luck on your quest. If I come across another reputable breeder, I'll be sure to post!

i got "kicked out" of a petstore ....... because i was in there looking at what kind of sweaters or carriers they had (DEFFINATLY NOT LOOKING AT THE PUPPIES)...... and i heard these women talking, they were actually going to BUY A GOLDEN RETRIEVER FROM THE STORE!!!! (he was marked at $950) I turned around (the owner was right there) and i told the women that they could get a golden WITH papers (AKC registered) for as low as $400, i even told them i would be happy to refer them to the breeder i used to get my last golden (and they took my offer) ....... the owner of teh store was FUMING I got the dirtiest look and then...... here is the kicker..... he said "i think it is better if you shop somewhere else and stop ruining my business" I dont think i did anythign wrong, it was an innocent conversation about breeder versus commercial value for animals

Mia came from a breeder that my sister's neighbor got hers from . She is in Miami. Her pups are CKC, not AKC. Most of her adults are AKC. Which papers didn't matter to me. Let me know if you want her website. | |
