| Pet Insurance I posted this question yesterday under the Health Forum and didn't get any answers so I thought I would try in this forum. Does anyone have their dogs covered under a pet insurance policy? I'm thinking about taking our coverage and wanted to know some pros and cons about it. Any recommendations?

| I don't, I guess I never really thought about it. How much does it cost?

| Are you asking about regular pet insurance? Like VPI or Embrace or one of those? If so, I ended up with Embrace and did basically a "major medical" setup with them where I had a high deductable and a low co-pay and a high payout amount. Their prices differ from state to state, but your dog is covered in all 50 states regardless of which state you sign up in. I don't have any great advice, since I just signed up. My Piper is such a daredevil that it just makes me feel better to pay the 250 per year for "just in case". I know some people advocate putting that money in savings and going that route, but looking at the prices of things that could go wrong, for me it made sense to do insurance. If only for piece of mind. |

| I'm not sure about the cost. My vet recommended it. She said I might have more vet bills with a small dog and the yearly visit should cover most of the cost of the insurance. There are differences since some of the plans don't cover wellness visits.

| I had a recent experience with a lab puppy which wound up costing close to $800 so $250 is nothing compared to what it could be.

| I have pet insurance for Kiwi through Embrace and it really helped us out! I chose Embrace because they cover genetic illnesses (which most pet insurances don't cover, so read carefully!). Kiwi had to have several expensive tests done and surgery for a liver biopsy. Embrace paid the entire bill, minus the deductible, in two weeks! All they wanted was a copy of the procedure and the bill. Embrace doesn't do wellness stuff, they encourage you to save and plan for that on your own. That makes sense, because you can budget for stuff like that. It is hard to budget for an $1100 surgery that you don't know your baby needs. I see the point some people have about a savings account, but I would have to save up for awhile to get the coverage I have through Embrace. Kiwi was only 7 months old when she had her surgery, so I wouldn't have had enough saved up to pay for the surgery from a savings account. Having Embrace was really nice, because we got the money back!
