Default What is the significance of Dew Claws?

What is the significance of Dew Claws/Nails and why are they removed?

they get removed because they can get caught on things & get ripped out
& im not sure but i think the yt standard says they must be removed for showing but im not 100% on that

Dewclaws are just an extra appendage...they have absolutely no purpose that I'm aware of. They are removed because dogs have a neater appearance without them and dewclaws tend to get caught on things and rip

Thanks for asking Yorksmama. I had always wondered that myself. You take it for granted but don't even really know why.

dewclaws that are left intact can be problematic if you don't stay on top of keeping them trimmed. I don't see any usage for them.

Tinkerbell has her dew clews and she has no problems........When she has her puppies I had the puppies removed though......I also have a maltese who has dew clews. I did buy them both in South Korea......So maybe they dont do it there

I have one with dewclaws and they are much harder to clip than the regular nails.

Pixie still has hers and she has an un-docked tail. her Dew claws are getting quite long now so i'm going to get them trimmed when she has her 1st haircut on the 10th january.
