| Does Anyone Know If These Ingredients Are "Dog Safe"? I am going to start making my dogs their own treats. Mine like Bully Stix but I want something that is more of a treat (for rewards) and something that I know how safe it is because I made it! I was wondering about a few of the ingredients that I need in order to make them. Do you guys know if these are safe....cornmeal, molasses, whole wheat flour? I feel almost 100% comfortable with them but wanted to also ask you guys. Thanks! Tammy Last edited by TammyJM; 12-22-2007 at 11:56 AM. |

| Yes. I use Canola Oil in their food and it was recommended by a nutritionist. I have bought treats that have cinnamon in them too. |

They are all safe but just something to keep in mind--some dogs can't tolerate wheat and/or corn products so if your dog starts to itch it may be the cornmeal or whole wheat and you may need it substitute that ingredient with something else. Some dogs also don't tolerate milk well--it may cause diarrhea--just depends on the dog.. Good luck!

oat flour is better than wheat flour for dogs w/ wheat allergies but it's not a straight substitution--it might change the consistency of the dough a bit so you might need to experiment with the recipe a bit. i've never used rye flour but i read somewhere that it's a good flour to use also

The recipe that I was going to use calls for 8 cups (total) whole wheat flour and 3/4 cup cornmeal. Does that seem like a normal about of flour or too much? It makes about 36 treats. So if I substitute the whole wheat flour with oat flour, do you think this would work? Also, should I also sub the oat flour for the cornmeal?? Sorry for all of the questions....I just know that my dogs will eat what I give them so I want to know that I am not handing them something unhealthy. Can I buy oat flour from the grocery store or is this something that I would eed to get at a health food store? Tammy | |

I'm not sure where you live, but I was only able to but oat flour at "whole foods" which is a grocery store that sells organic stuff. it was a tiny bag for almost $5 ! You can take oats--the old fashioned ones, not instant--and put them in a food processor until they become a 'flour' consistency. it will still be a bit coarse, not as coarse as wheat flour, but not as powdery as white or rice flour. Typically, you add flour to wet ingredients so try adding 1 cup of flour at a time, then mix it into the dough. When you get a good consistency--one that is easy to handle--not too sticky or too dry--then you've added enough flour. If the dough is too wet, you won't be able to roll it out and cut it onto bone shapes; if it's too dry, that means you added too much flour and the dough won't stick together properly to roll it out and cut it into shapes. 8 cups is a lot but it depends how much liquid is in the recipe. if the recipe makes 36 cookies, it may make 36 LARGE cookies. You will have much more cookies if you make them small/yorkie size . I would substitute the oat flour for wheat flour. You can try substituting the flour for the cornmeal as well but i don't know if the dough will be too doughy/rubbery and difficult to roll out. You might have to experiment a bit.
