| Hi Nicole. My Yorkie was also diagnosed with a luxating patella. He actually has it in both rear legs. I went through so many websites for info on this condition and many users of YT were very helpful as well. Here is one website that explains it very well:http://www.peteducation.com/article....&articleid=457 You can also do a google search on luxating patella in dogs and you will get tons of info. Also, you may do a search on YT and will come across lots of posts from users that can also be very helpful. Unfortuantely I was told the only way to correct a LP is through surgery but since my dog only has a grade 1 LP he doesn't need the surgery just yet. I hope he doesn't get worse. Good luck to you and I also hope your dog doesn't need the surgery.

| What grade is it? Loki's is a 2 and he will most likely never need surgery. Once in a while he limps, but either he or I can get the knee back in place (have the vet show you how.) Sam's are both 3's and she will probably need surgery in a year or two just based on how she walks. She doesn't bend her knees - she kind of pedals. She also sits with her legs straight out, rarely with her legs bent like most dogs. They say it's not painful but you never know. I give them both glucosamine supplements every day. You'll know if it becomes bad enough for them to need surgery. It tends to be a gradual thing. Also, it's true that you should *try* to keep them from jumping, but since mine can jump on the couch they also like to jump off. We have stairs for the bed but they only use them 1/2 the time to get down. Don't be too paranoid. We are just slowly saving a little extra money because we know it's inevitable Sam will need surgery. I've heard everything from $500-$1500 per knee.

| Thank you for the info, i don't know what grade but he is only 8 months old, so i'm sure he will eventually need surgery, he has never shown symptoms, the vet just checked i guess and found it in both legs

| Gracie has a grade 2 in her left leg and a grade 3 in the right. The surgeon recommended that both be done. Gracie only favors the grade 3 leg. I have a close friend who is also a vet, and discussed this with her. She said the grade 2 should be repaired, as it does cause pain whenever it luxates, whether Gracie shows it or not. Every vet I have discussed this with has said that if you do nothing for a grade 2 or higher, the dog may very likely have debilitating arthritis later in life. It was suggested that I start Gracie on Glucosamine. So, it looks like Gracie will have the first of 2 surgeries sometime next month.

| OK so they can do both at the same time? Also does anyone know how much it costs? I'm tempted to wait until spring - I wouldn't want her on the ice after surgery.

| Since we got her - we didn't get her as a puppy she was nearly 1 year old. The phone # for her breeder isn't on her papers, only an address, so I can't really call and ask. She doesn't do the limp like Loki. She walks with her knees locked - she just doesn't bend them. Try locking your knees and then walking and you'll see what I mean. BUT, she does stairs and runs and leaps and bounces off of everything. She dances on her back legs. It's so wierd. The vet watched her walk and thought it was odd, but said it's not time to do surgery yet. I really like my vet and she does know little dogs pretty well, I mean she diagnosed Loki's and I had no idea what an LP was when I got him and she explained it to me. I don't know. I put a call into her to get a referral for a specialist and I'll just get her checked.

I am thinking about putting her on a joint supplement though. What do you think about using Missing Link Plus? |
